Loving Relationships clearing
Trace recurring problems in current relationships back to inherited family/parental patterns, then loosen their grip by forgiving the parent and writing affirmations of the opposite pattern, on the premise that present relationships replay early conditioning until it is cleared.
Ray’s Loving Relationships clearing: Name the pattern that repeats in your relationships → trace it to the parent/family it came from → surface the “personal lie” inside it → forgive that parent (Ho’oponopono / ACIM-style) to drop your charge → write the opposite pattern as an affirmation with a response column. Premise: outer relationships replay inner conditioning, so they clear as the inheritance is released. Self-love first. Forgiveness frees you — it does not excuse harm; protect yourself and get support for abuse.
What it is
Sondra Ray’s Loving Relationships Training (LRT, 1980 onward) rests on one claim: the way you relate to a partner is largely a replay of the patterns you absorbed in your family of origin — above all from your parents.
The recurring trouble in your current relationships (the type you attract, the conflict you keep having, the disappointment that repeats) is, in her framing, an old family pattern and “personal lie” running underneath.
The practice is to name the inherited pattern, trace it to the parent it came from, forgive that parent, and write affirmations of the opposite pattern — so present relationships stop being governed by the past.
Her summary: “loving relationships begin with self-love,” and outer relationships clear as the inner conditioning is released (The Inner Creates the Outer outer mirrors inner).
In its full seminar form Ray layered in breathwork (“Liberation Breathing”), Ho’oponopono forgiveness, and A Course in Miracles; rendered here as a portable self-practice, the working core is pattern-spotting + forgiveness + affirmation.
The Method
- Name the recurring relationship pattern. Across past partners and current ones, what repeats? (e.g. “I attract unavailable people,” “I end up doing everything,” “I expect to be left.”) Write the actual recurring outcome.
- Trace it to the family / parent. Ask where you first learned it. Whose relationship modelled it? Whose love felt conditional, absent, smothering, or unsafe? Ray frames these as family patterns inherited from mother, father, and the family system.
- Surface the “personal lie” inside it. Under the pattern is a belief about yourself in love (“I’m too much,” “love isn’t safe,” “I have to earn it”). Name it plainly.
- Forgive the parent — to free yourself. Do a deliberate forgiveness pass toward the parent the pattern came from. Ray drew on Ho’oponopono (“I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you”) and ACIM-style forgiveness. The aim is to drop your own charge (The Inner Creates the Outer release to receive), not to declare the harm acceptable (see Safety).
- Write the opposite as an affirmation. Turn the cleared pattern into its positive counter-statement and write it with a response column: “I deserve a partner who shows up for me,” “It is safe to be fully myself and still be loved.” Work the responses until they soften.
- Watch the mirror. As the inner pattern loosens, notice changes in what you tolerate, choose, and attract. Revisit when an old pattern resurfaces. (Sourcing note: the family-pattern → parent → forgiveness → affirmation sequence, the “personal lie,” and “loving relationships begin with self-love” are documented LRT/Ray teachings; the breath and Divine-Mother layers are noted but set aside in this rendering. Faithful paraphrase; short phrases attributed.)
Source & Lineage
Sondra Ray built the Loving Relationships Training and Loving Relationships (1980). It draws on Ho’oponopono and A Course in Miracles forgiveness, and on the Rebirthing affirmation discipline she shared with Leonard Orr.
Distinct from Orr: Orr’s work targets the individual’s single governing belief and runs it through the breath; Ray’s distinctive contribution turns the same lineage outward onto relationships — mapping how parental/family patterns specifically shape who you partner with and how, and adding forgiveness of the parent as the release step.
Orr clears the self; Ray clears the relational inheritance. Distinct too from generic shadow work in its fixed family-pattern lens, and from radical-forgiveness worksheets in pairing forgiveness with affirmation re-patterning.
Common refinements
Reframing abuse as a pattern to “affirm away.” Serious harm is not a belief to overwrite. Forgiveness here is for your peace, not exoneration — and may not mean contact. See Safety.
- Forgiving as bypass. Skipping the genuine anger/grief and jumping to “I forgive you” suppresses rather than releases. Feel it first.
- Blaming parents and stopping there. Insight without the forgiveness + affirmation steps just deepens the grievance.
- Treating “family patterns” as fixed fate. Use them as prompts, not a deterministic horoscope of your love life.
- Expecting the partner to change. The work changes your inner pattern and choices; it does not operate on the other person.
