The Glass of Water Technique
Use a simple ritual — half a glass of water and a stated question before sleep, finished on waking — to set an intention and let the sleeping mind incubate an answer.
Glass of Water in 5 lines: Before bed, relax, define one clear question, hold a glass and affirm “this is all I need to find the solution.” Drink half; sleep holding the question. On waking, repeat the affirmation and drink the rest. Watch for a dream, a morning idea, or a daytime flash — and write it down. (The water is a ritual cue; the work is intention + sleep.)
What it is
A deceptively simple Silva problem-solving ritual. Before sleep you hold a glass of water, frame your question, drink half, and sleep on it; on waking you drink the other half and repeat the intention — expecting an answer to surface as a dream, a morning insight, or a flash during the day.
The glass functions as a tangible anchor for intention and a “bookend” around sleep. Stripped of the prop, it is a branded form of sleep-incubation / pre-sleep autosuggestion: a deliberate way to hand a problem to the sleeping, associative mind.
The Method
- At night, just before bed, fill a glass with water and reach a relaxed, inward state (ideally your alpha level — ).
- Define the problem or question clearly in your mind — one specific thing you want a solution to.
- Hold the glass (Silva’s version: raise it slightly, tip it toward you) and mentally affirm something like: “This is all I need to find the solution to the problem I have in mind.”
- Drink about half the glass, then go straight to sleep, holding the intention as the last thing in mind. (Leave the rest of the glass by the bed.)
- On waking, before fully getting up, take the remaining half, repeat the same affirmation — “This is all I need to find the solution…” — and drink it.
- Watch for the answer. It may come as a remembered dream, an idea on waking, or an insight during the day. Capture it (note it down) and act on it. (The half-now/half-on-waking glass ritual, the “this is all I need…” affirmation, and the expectation of a dream or daytime insight are Silva’s own, from the course and book.)
Source & Lineage
By José Silva (1914–1999); part of the Silva course (taught publicly from 1966) and The Silva Mind Control Method (1977). The underlying logic is ancient and widely paralleled: dream incubation (Asclepian temple sleep; modern protocols studied by Deirdre Barrett), Neville’s “fall asleep in the wish fulfilled” (SATS), and the folk “sleep on it.”.
Common refinements
A vague question. Specific in, specific out — reduce the problem to one clear sentence before sleep.
- Demanding a literal answer overnight. Read dreams and impressions associatively; the “answer” is often a reframe or a feeling, and may take several nights.
- Not capturing it. Keep a notepad by the bed; insight on waking evaporates fast if not written down immediately.
- Treating the water as the active agent. It isn’t — don’t fixate on the prop; the work is the intention + sleep.
- Forcing/anxiety at sleep onset. Hold the question with interest, then release into sleep; straining suppresses recall.
