Entering the Alpha Level
Reach a relaxed, inwardly focused ‘alpha level’ of mind — the calm baseline state in which every other Silva technique is performed.
Alpha entry in 5 lines: Eyes closed, turn the inner gaze slightly up. Relax the body head-to-toe. Count slowly down (start 100→1; over weeks shorten to 50, 25, 10, then 5→1). Affirm you’re at “a deeper, healthier level of mind.” Do your chosen Silva technique here; count up 1→5 to return, awake and refreshed.
What it is
The foundational Silva practice: a structured, eyes-closed relaxation-plus-countdown that brings the practitioner to what Silva called the alpha level (or simply “your level”) — a relaxed, inward, but fully awake and self-controlled state.
Silva named it after the alpha EEG band associated with relaxed wakefulness and held that the mind learns, visualises, and “programs” better at slower brain-wave frequencies. Every other Silva technique (the Mental Screen, Three Fingers, Mirror of the Mind, Glass of Water) is run from this state, so it is taught first.
It is, in plain terms, a self-administered relaxation/light-self-hypnosis induction with a branded vocabulary.
The Method
Silva taught a long initial induction that is gradually shortened by conditioning over a roughly 40-day schedule. The morning entry (Silva’s recommended way to learn). Because, in Silva’s words, “it will be easier to access the deeper Alpha levels when you’re already in the shallow Alpha levels,” he had students practise just after waking, while still drowsy:
- On waking, with eyes closed, turn the closed eyes slightly upward (about 20°).
- Count slowly down from 100 to 1, letting yourself relax further with each number. The deepening / practice schedule.
- First 10 mornings: count down from 100 to 1.
- Next 10 mornings: from 50 to 1.
- Next 10: from 25 to 1.
- Next 10: from 10 to 1.
- From then on: from 5 to 1 — by now the count alone drops you to level. The longer “centering” relaxation (used when not relying on the just-woke state). Sit or lie comfortably, eyes closed; take a few slow breaths; then relax the body progressively head-to-toe — scalp, face, neck, shoulders, arms, torso, legs, feet — releasing each area. Then count down (e.g. 50→1 or 5→1) to deepen. Affirming the level. Silva paired the descent with set affirmations that condition the state and frame intent, e.g. telling oneself that one is “at a deeper, healthier level of mind” and that “every time” one enters this level it becomes easier and the affirmations more effective. To come out, Silva counted up 1→5, affirming feeling wide awake and well. (“Alpha level,” “your level,” the head-to-toe relaxation, the 100/50/25/10/5 countdown schedule, the ~20° upward eye angle, and count-up exit are Silva’s own structure from the course and book. The EEG framing is Silva’s interpretation, not established fact — see §4.)
Source & Lineage
José Silva (1914–1999), a self-taught electronics technician in Laredo, Texas, began experimenting in the mid-1940s with relaxation and suggestion to help his children study, concluding the mind functions better at lower brain-wave frequencies.
He refined the full course over ~20 years, taught it publicly from 1966, and published The Silva Mind Control Method (with Philip Miele) in 1977. The induction is the gateway lesson of the course.
Common refinements
Chasing a literal brain state. You don’t need to verify “real alpha.” Aim for relaxed, eyes-closed, inwardly focused and calm — that is the whole target.
- Skipping the conditioning schedule. The shortening (100→…→5) is what makes the state arrive on cue; rushing to a 5-count before the body has learned to relax produces shallow results.
- Falling asleep. Practising lying down right after waking can tip into sleep; sit up slightly or practise sitting if you keep dozing.
- Tension left in the body. If the count isn’t deepening you, return to the head-to-toe relaxation first.
