The Raven Method
Lie in a ‘starfish’ position and count to 100 with affirmations and vivid imagining of the Desired Reality (DR), aiming to ‘shift’ at the hypnagogic threshold between waking and sleep.
Raven method in 5 lines: At bedtime, relax/meditate ~10 min, then lie on your back in a “starfish” (limbs spread, not touching). Count slowly to 100, repeating shifting affirmations and vividly imagining your DR between numbers; welcome tingling/numbness as you drift toward sleep. Aim to “shift” at that hypnagogic threshold. (Honest framing: this reliably produces real hypnagogic / lucid-dream / vivid-imagination states; the claim of traveling to an objectively real parallel reality is unproven. Keep a safe word; skip it if prone to derealization or using the DR to escape.)
What it is
The Raven method is one of the best-known reality-shifting techniques from the online “shifting” subculture that surged on TikTok, Amino, and Tumblr around 2020. In shifting language, you are trying to move your awareness from your Current Reality (CR) to a self-authored Desired Reality (DR) — often a fictional or fandom world.
The Raven method is a sleep-onset routine: you lie flat in a “starfish” position (on your back, arms and legs spread so limbs don’t touch), then count slowly to 100, inserting shifting affirmations between the numbers while vividly imagining your DR.
The goal is to stay mentally awake while the body falls asleep, reaching the hypnagogic threshold where practitioners report “shifting.” Honest framing up front: the state this produces — deep relaxation, drifting imagery, tingling, the body “falling asleep” while the mind stays alert — is a real, well-documented phenomenon (hypnagogia / the WILD lucid-dream window).
The further claim that you have literally relocated to an objectively real parallel world is unproven; see §5.
The Method
There is no single canonical text — it is a crowd-authored community method — but the shared version is consistent:
- (Optional) Have a script ready. Many practitioners first write a “script” of their DR so the world is clear before they begin.
- Set a calm environment. A dark, quiet room at bedtime; some use soft meditation music or subliminals; remove distractions.
- Meditate to relax (~10 min). Settle the body and quiet the mind first.
- Lie in the “starfish” position. On your back, arms and legs spread wide, limbs not touching other parts of the body — the community holds this keeps the body “open,” relaxed, and free of distraction. “Spread your arms and legs wide. It’s important that your limbs aren’t touching other parts of your body.”
- Count to 100 with affirmations. Eyes closed, count slowly toward 100, and between numbers repeat shifting affirmations — e.g. “I am shifting,” “Shifting comes easily to me,” “I am going to my desired reality.” (Variants: affirm after every number, or affirm only at intervals, then say “I have shifted” at 100.)
- Vividly imagine the DR between numbers. As you count, see, hear, and feel the Desired Reality as if already there.
- Welcome the symptoms. Tingling, numbness, lightheadedness, heaviness, or floating are treated as good signs — “you want your consciousness to be awake while your body falls asleep.” These are the standard hypnagogic / sleep-onset sensations.
- “Shift” at the threshold (or fall asleep and retry). Practitioners aim to cross over at the edge of sleep; many simply fall asleep and try again on later nights. (Sourcing note: faithfully synthesised from community guides; short quotes are illustrative of the shared instructions, not a single proprietary text.)
Source & Lineage
The Raven method has no individual author; it is a product of the collectively-authored reality-shifting community (c. 2020–present). Its real technical ancestry is clear: it is a sleep-onset / hypnagogic induction closely related to lucid-dreaming WILD (Wake-Initiated Lucid Dream), to yoga nidra body-stillness, and — within the manifestation lineage — to Neville Goddard’s SATS (“state akin to sleep”), counting/affirming at the threshold of sleep.
The shifting community fuses these with law-of-assumption ideas and multiverse/many-worlds imagery, reframing the threshold not as a dream gateway but as a doorway between realities. → see also the community’s other named methods (Julia, pillow, Alice-in-Wonderland, Sunni).
The Traditions' versions
Lucid dreaming (WILD) — staying conscious as the body falls asleep to enter a dream with awareness; the same hypnagogic window the Raven method uses. → (OBE/lucid entries)
- Neville’s SATS — relax to the sleep-threshold and assume the wish fulfilled; the manifestation-lineage parent.
- The void state — anonymous LoA method targeting the same deep sleep-threshold for affirmation.
- Yoga nidra — systematic stillness/relaxation to the edge of sleep for intention-setting.
- Sibling shifting methods — the Julia method (no-sleep, “I am” affirmations) and the pillow method (affirmations under the pillow).
Common refinements
Straining to “shift.” Effort blocks the relaxation the method depends on; trying hard usually just keeps you awake or frustrated.
- Falling asleep every time. Extremely common (same problem as WILD); practicing when a little less exhausted, or slightly more upright, helps hold the threshold.
- Treating symptoms as proof. Tingling/numbness are ordinary sleep-onset sensations, not evidence of crossing realities — welcome them, but don’t over-read them.
- No return plan. Decide in advance how you’ll come back (a “safe word” or simply waking); see Safety.
- Refinement: held as guided hypnagogia / lucid-dream practice + vivid creative imagining, it is a fine, low-cost practice; held as literal world-travel, it can breed disappointment and escapism.
