Vowel Mantralization

To vocalize the five vowels (and added consonants) in a prolonged, sustained way so that, in Samael’s system, the chakras of the body ‘vibrate’ and latent faculties awaken; functionally, a sustained sounding-meditation practice.

Intermediate Up to one hour daily (beginners may start at ~10 min and split sessions) Gnosticism (Modern/Universal Gnosticism)
Vowel mantralization in 4 lines: On a long out-breath, slowly sustain each vowel until the lungs empty — I (ee), E (eh), O (oh), U (oo), A (ah). Feel the vibration; feel the sound, don’t just say it. Build toward ~1 hour daily (start at 10 min). Treat the calm and focus as the real fruit; the psychic-faculty claims are his framework, not established fact.

Samael Aun Weor taught “mantralization” — the prolonged vocalization of sacred sounds — as a daily practice to awaken what he calls the chakras, the “magnetic wheels” of the body.

His signature version is the five vowels I, E, O, U, A (pronounced as in ee, eh, oh, oo, ah), each said to set a particular gland or chakra “vibrating” and to unfold a corresponding faculty.

He frames the power as residing not in the lips but in awareness: “the clue of pranava… is found within the consciousness… the mantras must be felt.” Stripped of the metaphysics, it is a sustained vocal-toning meditation on long, breath-emptying tones.

It works with attention (The Inner Creates the Outer), the idea of sound as a creative/active force (The Inner Creates the Outer), the principle of vibration (The Inner Creates the Outer), and daily repetition (The Inner Creates the Outer).

From Logos Mantra Theurgy and his meditation writings:

  1. Set the duration. Samael prescribes about one hour of daily vocalization, claiming “one hour of daily vocalization is worth more than reading a thousand books of oriental theosophy.” Beginners may start with ~10 minutes and build, or split it into several short sessions.
  2. Vocalize each vowel slowly, prolonging the sound, emptying the lungs. Sound one vowel on a long exhalation until the breath is spent, then inhale and continue. The order he gives is I – E – O – U – A (and, in the extended seven-sound form, with M and S added).
  3. The vowels and their claimed effects (his system): - I — vibrates the pituitary/pineal; said to develop clairvoyance. - E — vibrates the thyroid; said to develop clairaudience. - O — vibrates the heart chakra; said to develop intuition. - U — vibrates the solar plexus; said to develop telepathy. - A — vibrates the lung chakra; said to grant recall of past lives. - M / S (extended form) — said to aid conscious astral departure and the spiritual powers generally.
  4. Feel the mantra, don’t just say it. Before and while vocalizing, “live” the sound in awareness — for Samael the intention and felt quality matter as much as the phonetics.
  5. Practise consistently. The effect is held to come from steady daily repetition over time, not single sessions. (Sourcing note: “the mantras must be felt,” “one hour of daily vocalization is worth more than reading a thousand books of oriental theosophy,” and the vowel→gland/faculty correspondences are short attributed quotes/paraphrases from the English editions. The faculties listed are claims within his system.)

Mantra and vowel work appear across Samael Aun Weor’s corpus, concentrated in Logos Mantra Theurgy and Esoteric Medicine and Practical Magic.

The vowel-to-chakra scheme blends Hindu/Tantric mantra and chakra theory with Western esoteric “vibration” ideas current in Theosophy; the specific I/E/O/U/A → gland/faculty mapping is his own systematization.

He treats sound “theurgically” — as an operative spiritual force — consistent with the broader New Thought/occult conviction that the word is creative (The Inner Creates the Outer).

He is a controversial figure; this entry describes the practice neutrally and does not endorse the psychic-faculty claims. → (Samael Aun Weor).

Forcing the voice. A full hour of loud chanting can strain the throat; keep the tone easy, and split long sessions.

  • Rushing the vowels. The whole point is the prolonged, breath-emptying sustain; clipped sounds lose it.
  • Chasing powers. Practising in order to “get” clairvoyance breeds frustration and self-deception; treat any quieting/clarity as the real, reliable fruit.
  • Mechanical repetition. Samael insists the mantra be felt; absent attention, it’s just noise.
  • Refinement: Start with one or two vowels for 5–10 minutes, comfortable volume, focusing on the breath and the felt vibration, before extending duration.
