Breath & Energy · “Breath Is the Bridge”
Earth Breathing
To feel the breath as energy drawn up from the earth through the lower body and released back down, deeply grounding awareness in the soma and settling the nervous system.
Earth Breathing in 5 lines: Lie or sit grounded and let attention drop into the lower body. Breathe into the very base of the pelvis at the perineum, feeling any tension there. On each out-breath, let the pelvis sink more deeply into the earth. Breathe into a point a few inches below you, in direct contact with the ground, drawing the earth’s energy up into the lower belly. Reach further with each cycle, staying with felt sensation, not thought.
What it is
Earth Breathing is Reginald Ray’s grounding breath practice: lying or sitting, you breathe into the very base of the body and imagine/feel the breath as energy drawn up from the earth through the pelvis and lower belly, then released back down with each exhale so the body sinks deeper into the ground.
In the Tibetan somatic frame Ray teaches, the earth is met as a living, calming, healing presence; practically, the work is to pull attention and breath downward — out of the head and into direct contact with the ground.
Ray’s instruction is plain: “Bring your breath into the bottom of your pelvis at the perineum. Feel any tension you may have there,” and then “with each out-breath, let your pelvis sink more and more deeply into the earth.” It is the breath companion to his Ten Points descent, operationalizing present-moment grounding (Everything Happens in the Now) and the placing of attention — “whatever location in the body we direct our attention to, there the prana will go” (The Inner Creates the Outer).
The Method
Faithfully, in outline:
- Settle, ideally lying down. Lie on your back (knees up) or sit grounded. Let the body relax and the attention drop from thinking into the lower body.
- Breathe into the base of the pelvis. Bring the breath “into the bottom of your pelvis at the perineum.” Feel whatever tension is held there, without trying to fix it.
- Sink on the out-breath. “With each out-breath, let your pelvis sink more and more deeply into the earth.” Let gravity and exhalation do the work — releasing downward.
- Make contact below the body. Extend awareness: “begin to breathe into a point that is a few inches below your perineum, putting you in direct contact with the earth.” Feel the breath as reaching into the ground.
- Draw the energy up, release it down. Feel the in-breath as drawing the earth’s energy up into the lower belly; the out-breath as releasing back down. Ray’s cue: “continue to breathe the earth’s energy up into your lower belly, going further down each time.”
- Reach further with each cycle. “Continue reaching further and further, while continuing to let the energy further up into your body” — alternating the downward grounding with the rising sense of energy, staying with felt sensation rather than thought. (Sourcing note: quoted phrases — “Bring your breath into the bottom of your pelvis at the perineum,” “with each out-breath, let your pelvis sink more and more deeply into the earth,” “a few inches below your perineum, putting you in direct contact with the earth,” “the earth’s energy up into your lower belly, going further down each time,” “whatever location in the body we direct our attention to, there the prana will go” — are short, attributed renderings from Ray’s published descriptions and guided practice; the protocol is a faithful description, not a reproduction.)
Source & Lineage
Reginald A. Ray (student of Chogyam Trungpa; founder of Dharma Ocean) draws Earth Breathing from the somatic energy practices of Tibetan Tantra, recast for modern practitioners as a body-based meditation.
It is part of the same descent-into-the-body project as Touching Enlightenment and The Awakening Body, here using breath and the felt relationship to the earth as the vehicle of grounding.
The Traditions' versions
Lower-belly / diaphragmatic breathing — settling the breath into the abdomen.
- Serene breath awareness — restful awareness of the natural breath.
- Grounding & running energy (Brennan) — drawing earth energy up the body.
- Witch’s grounding / cone of power — rooting energy into the earth.
- Anapanasati — mindfulness of breathing as anchor.
Common refinements
Forcing or over-breathing. Keep the breath easy and low; straining or over-breathing causes light-headedness and defeats the settling.
- Staying in the head. If you’re thinking about the earth rather than feeling the contact, drop attention back down to the pelvis and the ground.
- Skipping the exhale-sink. The grounding lives in the out-breath release; let weight actually drop.
- Treating the energy literally as dogma. Hold the “earth’s energy” as felt imagery, not a fact to defend — the felt sense is what matters in practice.
