The Gnostic Pentagram Ritual (GPR)
Open and close magical work with a centring, ‘banishing’ rite that clears stray mental contents and marks a psychological boundary — built from vowel-vibration body energising plus pentagrams drawn in the four quarters, with no commitment to any god-names or one cosmology.
Gnostic Pentagram Ritual: Stand centred. Vibrate I-E-A-O-U on slow exhales, lighting head → throat → heart/lungs+limbs → belly → genitals. Then in each of the four quarters draw a glowing pentagram, one vowel per line (I-E-A-O-U), turning anticlockwise after each, back to start. Finally re-vibrate the five vowels to draw the radiance back to centre and close. Honest read: a belief-neutral grounding/banishing rite — focus, calm, boundary, and a clean on/off switch for magical work, not literal warding.
What it is
The Gnostic Pentagram Ritual (also “the Gnostic Banishing”) is Peter J. Carroll’s deliberately belief-neutral replacement for the Golden Dawn’s Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP).
It does the same job — centre yourself, clear the mental field, mark the start and end of magical work — but strips out the Hebrew god-names, archangels, and Qabalistic scaffolding, replacing them with bare vowel-sounds vibrated through the body and pentagrams drawn in the four quarters.
In chaos-magick terms it is a “banishing” that commits you to nothing: pure technique. Read honestly, it is a short ritual that combines toning, paced breath, body-awareness, and gesture to produce a reliable psychological reset and boundary.
The Method
Stand relaxed, feet apart, in the centre of your space. Part 1 — The Gnostic energising (vibrate the vowels down the body).
- Inhale fully. Exhale slowly, sustaining the sound “I” (as in “ee”), while visualising a radiance of energy in the head.
- Inhale; exhale on “E”, radiance in the throat.
- Inhale; exhale on “A” (as in “ah”), radiance in the heart and lungs, spreading out into the muscles of the limbs.
- Inhale; exhale on “O”, radiance in the belly.
- Inhale; exhale on “U” (as in “oo”), radiance in the genital / perineal region.
- Feel the whole body lit by these five centres of radiance. (Some practitioners then run the sounds back up — U, O, A, E, I — to the head; Carroll’s form energises the body before the quarters.) Part 2 — The pentagrams in the four quarters.
- Face the first quarter. With the arm/hand, draw a large pentagram in the air, tracing its five lines while vibrating the five sounds I-E-A-O-U, one sound per line. Visualise the pentagram glowing strongly.
- Make an anticlockwise quarter-turn of the whole body to the next quarter.
- Repeat the pentagram-and-vowels in this quarter, then turn again. Continue until you have drawn a pentagram in all four quarters and arrived back facing your start. Part 3 — Recombination / close.
- Returned to centre and to your original direction, repeat the vowel-energising of Part 1 (steps 1–5), drawing the radiance back into the body’s centre to seal and balance the working. End in stillness. (Sourcing note: a faithful summary of Carroll’s Gnostic Pentagram Ritual from Liber Null & Psychonaut and Liber Kaos. The I-E-A-O-U → head / throat / heart-lungs-limbs / belly / genitals mapping, the pentagram-per-quarter with one vowel per line, and the anticlockwise quarter-turns are Carroll’s. Practitioners vary the turn direction and whether the sounds run back up; the core structure is as given.)
Source & Lineage
Peter J. Carroll built the GPR as part of the Illuminates of Thanateros practice and published it in Liber Null & Psychonaut (1987), expanding the rationale in Liber Kaos (1992).
Its explicit ancestor is the Golden Dawn / Crowley LBRP, which Carroll regarded as effective but doctrinally loaded; the GPR keeps the form (centre → quarters → recombine) while discarding the specific symbol-set, in keeping with chaos magick’s “all cosmologies are models” stance. → suggested node.
It pairs naturally with (banish before and after charging a sigil) and (the underlying concentration).
The Traditions' versions
Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (Golden Dawn / Crowley) — the direct template Carroll secularised.
- Vowel / “Bornless” toning rites — sustained vowel vibration to “charge” the body; a Western echo of mantra.
- Bija-mantra chakra work (tantra/yoga) — seed-syllables resonated through body centres; structurally parallel to the vowel-down-the-body energising.
- Casting a circle (Wicca / ceremonial) — marking the four quarters to define sacred/working space.
- Opening-and-closing rituals generally — any “container” rite that brackets focused work.
Common refinements
Rushing the vibration. The calming and focusing effect lives in the slow, sustained exhaled tone — short, perfunctory sounds lose most of the benefit.
- No visualisation. Drawing pentagrams and toning without actually seeing the radiance/star reduces it to empty arm-waving; the imagery is load-bearing.
- Losing the breath rhythm. One full sound per exhale, refill between; don’t run out of air mid-vowel.
- Skipping the recombination. Part 3 “closes” the rite and the state; omitting it can leave practitioners feeling scattered or “left open” (psychologically).
- Treating it as literal protection. Used as superstition (“nothing can harm me now”) it can foster avoidance; used as a focusing/closing tool it’s healthy.
