Osho Nataraj Meditation
To dissolve the self-conscious ‘dancer’ by dancing totally and possessed-ly until only the dance remains — then collapse into stillness so the absorbed, ego-less state can be witnessed.
Osho Nataraj in 3 lines (65 minutes, eyes closed): 40 min — dance as if possessed, no control, no watching, until only the dance remains. 20 min — drop and lie utterly still and silent. 5 min — dance in celebration. (Pure dance-as-meditation; clear a safe space and don’t overdo it physically.)
What it is
Nataraj is Osho’s dance meditation — 65 minutes in three stages: 40 minutes of total, abandoned dancing, 20 minutes lying utterly still, and 5 minutes of celebratory dance.
Nataraj is the dancing form of Shiva — “the lord of the dance.” The aim is dance as meditation: you dance so completely, “as if possessed,” that the self-conscious dancer disappears and only the dancing remains — a state of pure absorption with no inner division and no effort to control or even to watch.
Then you drop into stillness so that absorbed, ego-quiet state can settle and be witnessed. Of Osho’s active meditations it is the most purely movement-as-meditation.
The Method
Three stages over 65 minutes, with eyes closed throughout the dance (Osho, Nataraj instructions):
- Stage 1 — Dance (40 min). With eyes closed, dance as if possessed — let your unconscious take over completely. Do not control the movements and do not stand back as a witness; just be totally in the dance, lost in it, until the dancer dissolves and only the dance is left. Forget yourself and let the body move however it will.
- Stage 2 — Stillness (20 min). Keeping the eyes closed, lie down immediately and become silent and still. Don’t arrange the body — drop and stay. Rest in the absorbed quiet the dancing produced and simply be aware of it.
- Stage 3 — Celebration (5 min). Dance in celebration — light, joyful movement to carry the aliveness forward — and enjoy. (Sourcing note: the 65-minute, 40/20/5 three-stage structure, “dance as if possessed,” “do not control. do not be a witness. just be totally in the dance,” eyes closed, and “lie down immediately” are Osho’s documented instructions; descriptions are a faithful summary. Osho-branded music supports the stages.)
Source & Lineage
Osho (Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, 1931–1990) placed Nataraj among his “active meditations,” building on the ancient idea — Shiva Nataraja, Sufi whirling, ecstatic and trance dance worldwide — that surrendered dance can dissolve the ego and become contemplation.
Where Dynamic uses catharsis and Kundalini uses shaking, Nataraj uses pure absorbed dance as the doorway to stillness. As with all his work it belongs to the highly controversial Rajneesh/Osho movement (Oregon-commune crimes; cult allegations), flagged for context only. → existing companion; originator or.
The Traditions' versions
“Dance/move until the self dissolves, then rest” appears across cultures:
- Sufi whirling (Mevlevi / Rumi) — sustained turning to dissolve the self in the divine.
- 5Rhythms (Gabrielle Roth) & ecstatic/trance dance — free dance as moving meditation and release.
- Bharatanatyam / Nataraja devotional dance — dance as worship and absorption (the namesake lineage).
- Companion Osho practices — Kundalini (shaking) and Nadabrahma (humming) as the other movement/sound doorways.,
- Flow states (Csikszentmihalyi) — the psychological description of the “dancer disappears” experience.
Common refinements
Watching yourself dance. Osho is explicit: in stage 1 do not be the witness — that’s stage 2’s job. Witnessing here keeps the self-conscious dancer alive; the instruction is to be lost in the dance.
- Controlling / choreographing. The dance must be uncontrolled and possessed — let the unconscious lead. Polished, deliberate movement defeats it.
- Rearranging before lying down. Stage 2 says lie down immediately and don’t fuss with position — the suddenness preserves the absorbed state.
- Cutting the stillness short. The 20-minute stillness is where the practice “lands”; the dance only opens the door.
- Unsafe space / eyes peeking. Eyes-closed possessed dance needs a clear, obstacle-free area; clear the room first.
