Affirmation  ·  “The Subconscious Says Yes”

Norvell's Cosmic Affirmation

Repeat present-tense statements of the desired good, daily and with conviction, to direct the subconscious toward it.

Beginner 5-10 min daily (a fixed morning and evening repetition) New Thought / Mind Power
Write one short, present-tense, believable statement of the good you want. Say it morning and evening, with real conviction and feeling, while picturing the result. Keep it consistent over weeks, and act on what it makes you notice. The repetition is ordinary autosuggestion; ignore the promise that the words alone summon wealth.

Alongside the mental picture, Anthony Norvell taught a verbal practice: short, present-tense affirmations repeated daily to instruct the deeper mind.

The publisher’s description of The Million Dollar Secret Hidden in Your Mind (1963) names “affirmative thought” as one of the two “latent mental powers” the book exists to release (the other being visualization).

In Norvell’s framing the subconscious is a literal-minded servant (“The Magic Genie within Your Subconscious Mind”) that accepts and acts on whatever it is told repeatedly and with feeling — so the affirmation is the instruction you keep feeding it.

In his later prosperity books — notably Cosmic Magnetism (1970), with its “Magic Power Circle” and “3 Cosmic Creative Commands,” and Mind Cosmology (1971) — Norvell ritualized this into daily spoken “commands” or money mantras meant to align you with what he called a cosmic source of supply.

The honest core of the practice is ordinary autosuggestion; the “cosmic” wrapper is an added metaphysical claim.

(Attributed paraphrase; phrases in quotes are Norvell’s / the publisher’s chapter language.) 1. State the good as already true, in the first person and present tense. Frame what you want as a settled fact, not a future hope or a plea (“I am.” / “I now.”).

  1. Keep it short, positive and specific. A clean, repeatable line — about money, health, confidence, or opportunity — that you can say from memory.
  2. Repeat it daily at fixed times. Norvell favoured a set morning and evening routine, when relaxation makes the mind most receptive; Mind Cosmology recommends a sustained daily practice.
  3. Say it with conviction and feeling, not by rote. The believed emotional charge is what Norvell treats as carrying the statement into the subconscious — flat repetition does little.
  4. Pair word with image. Norvell intends the affirmation and the mental movie to reinforce each other: say the line while seeing and feeling the result.
  5. Persist; then act. Treat the regimen as steady “programming” over days and weeks, and act on the ideas and openings it surfaces.

From Anthony Norvell, The Million Dollar Secret Hidden in Your Mind (1963; Tarcher/Penguin reissue 2012), with the “cosmic command” elaboration in Cosmic Magnetism (1970) and Mind Cosmology (1971).

The method is squarely in the New Thought autosuggestion lineage — Coué’s conscious autosuggestion, the affirmation-and-decree practice of writers such as Florence Scovel Shinn and Catherine Ponder — repackaged by Norvell for a prosperity-minded mass audience.

Affirming what you flatly disbelieve. A statement far from your real self-image can trigger contradicting thoughts and lower mood; research suggests starting from believable, “bridging” wording.

  • Rote repetition. Mumbling the line without conviction wastes it; the felt belief is the point.
  • Magic-word thinking. Expecting the phrase itself to move money or events, with no action, is the chief failure mode — and the place where the “cosmic command” framing most overclaims.
  • Inconsistency. The effect is cumulative; a once-in-a-while affirmation does little.
