Working Toward the Virtue

To consciously orient growth toward the ‘virtue’ that is the antidote to one’s type’s passion — e.g. serenity against anger, humility against pride, equanimity against envy — using the virtue as the direction of transformation rather than forcing it as a behaviour.

Intermediate Ongoing; a continual orientation rather than a timed exercise Enneagram Of Personality
Working toward the virtue in 4 lines: Know your passion’s antidote-virtue (e.g. anger→serenity, pride→humility, fear→courage). See the passion first; the virtue grows as the fixation loosens. Hold the virtue as a direction, not a costume — and in the caught moment, incline one degree toward it. Let it ripen from presence, unmeasured.

In Naranjo’s Enneagram, each type’s passion has a corresponding virtue — its natural antidote and the quality that emerges as the fixation relaxes. The passions and their virtues are paired: for example anger → serenity, pride → humility, vanity/deceit → truthfulness (authenticity), envy → equanimity, avarice → non-attachment (detachment), fear → courage, gluttony → sobriety, lust → innocence, and sloth/self-forgetting → right action (diligence).

“Working toward the virtue” means taking your type’s virtue as the conscious direction of growth: orienting attention and intention toward it as the counter-movement to the passion. Critically, in Naranjo’s view the virtue is not forced on as a behaviour but is what naturally arises as the passion is seen and loosened — so the practice is one of orientation and invitation, the positive pole that complements self-observation.

It aims at the recovery of the deeper Self (All Is One) and the integration of the split-off quality (The Inner Creates the Outer), held by directed attention (The Inner Creates the Outer).

A faithful operational distillation:

  1. Know your passion-virtue pair. Identify your type’s passion and its matched virtue (the antidote). The virtue names the direction, not a trait to manufacture.
  2. Lead with seeing the passion. The virtue grows as the passion is observed and dis-identified from (this is why it follows the self-observation practice, not replaces it). First see the anger; serenity becomes possible as its automaticity drops.
  3. Hold the virtue as an orientation, not a costume. Keep the virtue gently in view as the quality you are moving toward — a north star for attention and choice — rather than a performance to put on. Forced virtue is usually the passion in disguise.
  4. Choose the counter-movement in the moment. When the passion arises and you’ve caught it, deliberately incline toward the virtue’s direction — e.g. toward non-attachment when avarice grips, toward courage when fear contracts. This is the gentle, conscious step against the habitual pull.
  5. Let it ripen; don’t grade it. Treat the virtue as something that unfolds over time as character work matures, not a box to tick. Self-scoring tends to recruit the fixation again.
  6. Pair with presence. Sustain the orientation from the meditative ground of presence, so the virtue arises from spaciousness rather than effortful self-improvement. (Sourcing note: the passion-virtue scheme is core to Naranjo’s Enneagram (rooted in Ichazo’s Arica teaching), and the principle that the virtue emerges as the passion relaxes is faithful to his approach; the numbered steps are an operational summary, not a verbatim protocol.)

The passion-virtue structure comes to Naranjo from Oscar Ichazo’s Arica enneagram and is elaborated psychologically in Naranjo’s Ennea-type Structures (1990) and Character and Neurosis (1994).

The idea that virtue follows the seeing of vice connects to the contemplative and Fourth-Way traditions Naranjo synthesised. → (cf. Ichazo).

Performing the virtue. Manufacturing serenity or humility as a self-image is the fixation wearing a halo — a forced calm or a showy modesty. The virtue is a direction, not a costume.

  • Skipping the passion. Reaching for the virtue without seeing the passion first tends to produce bypass; the antidote works because the poison has been seen.
  • Grading yourself. Scoring your “progress” in virtue re-engages the very fixation (especially for pride/vanity types). Let it ripen unmeasured.
  • Refinement: In the caught moment, incline one degree toward the virtue’s direction rather than demanding a full transformation; small honest counter-movements compound.
