Meditation + Character Work
To use meditation / self-inquiry to create the inner space and presence from which the ego-fixation can be seen and not-identified with — pairing stillness (presence) with character self-observation rather than doing either alone.
Meditation + character work in 4 lines: Build a daily meditative base so you can rest as aware presence. From that stillness, gently turn toward your type’s passion and watch it held in awareness. Notice you are the watcher, not the pattern — let it dis-identify. Carry that presence into daily life; keep both stillness and seeing alive.
What it is
Naranjo’s distinctive move was to insist that Enneagram character work and meditation belong together. Self-observation alone can become dry, analytic, or self-critical; meditation alone can become a calm that quietly avoids the personality.
So in his SAT (Seekers After Truth) program he paired the two: a foundation of meditative presence and stillness that creates the inner space — the witnessing ground — from which the ego-fixation can actually be seen and not identified with.
The meditation supplies the steady, spacious awareness; the character work supplies what to look at. Together they aim at recovering contact with a deeper, less-defended Self (All Is One) through stillness (The Inner Creates the Outer) and the witness (Life Is a Dream).
The pairing is the point: presence plus self-observation, neither substituting for the other.
The Method
A faithful operational distillation of the meditation-and-character pairing:
- Establish a daily meditative base. Sit in a simple presence / awareness practice (Naranjo drew on Buddhist meditation, including study with Tarthang Tulku) — resting attention, letting thought settle, abiding in stillness. This builds the capacity to witness.
- Let presence come first. Begin from settledness, not analysis. The aim is to be the spacious awareness in which contents appear, before looking at any particular content.
- Bring the fixation into that space. From this grounded presence, gently turn toward your type’s habitual strategy and passion — not to fix or judge it, but to see it held within awareness, as an object in consciousness rather than the seer itself.
- Practise not-identifying. As the fixation appears, notice that you are the one aware of it — the watcher is not the pattern. This dis-identification is what loosens the automatic grip; presence makes it possible where bare effort cannot.
- Carry presence into the day. The sit is rehearsal; the real work is returning to that witnessing presence in daily life as the passion arises (joining the live self-observation practice).
- Alternate, don’t collapse one into the other. Keep both poles alive — periods of pure stillness and periods of seeing the character. Neglecting stillness makes the work harsh; neglecting the character makes the stillness a bypass. (Sourcing note: the explicit pairing of meditation with Enneagram character work, and the use of presence as the ground for non-identification, are Naranjo’s approach in the SAT program; the numbered steps are a faithful operational summary, not a verbatim instruction set.)
Source & Lineage
The integration is Claudio Naranjo’s, developed in the SAT Institute and articulated across his Enneagram writings (Character and Neurosis, 1994) and his broader work (The One Quest).
It fuses Buddhist meditation (including Nyingma study with Tarthang Tulku), Gestalt presence, and the Gurdjieff / Ichazo self-observation of fixations. → (cf. Gurdjieff; Buddhist meditation lineage).
Common refinements
Meditation as bypass. Using stillness to avoid the personality — feeling serene while the fixation runs untouched — is the exact failure mode Naranjo’s pairing was designed to prevent. Keep the character work in.
- Character work without presence. Analysing your type with no meditative ground tends to curdle into self-criticism and rumination. Lead with presence.
- Forcing dis-identification. You cannot muscle your way out of identification; you can only rest in awareness and let the gap appear. Effort here is usually a fresh identification.
- Refinement: Keep both doses small and regular rather than occasional and intense — daily presence plus light daily seeing beats rare deep dives.
