Monroe's Vibrational State & Separation
From deep borderland relaxation, to deliberately induce the ‘vibrational state’, bring it under control, and attempt separation of awareness from the body via ‘lift-out’ or ‘rotation’ (roll-out).
Vibrational induction in brief: Reach deep lucid relaxation (Condition D). Affirm intent ×5. Mouth-breathe; fix attention at 1ft → 3ft → 6ft, then turn 90° above the head and “reach for the vibrations,” pulling them into your head. When the buzzing/rigidity comes, don’t panic — observe. Then control it: drive a head-to-toe wave, speed it up until smooth. Hold single/no-thought. Either lift out (“think how nice it would be to float up”) or roll out (turn over slowly, no limbs, 180°, then float back). Return by moving the body, opening the eyes, restoring the senses.
What it is
This is the core induction Robert Monroe taught in Journeys Out of the Body (1971): once you can hold deep, lucid relaxation (his Condition D), you deliberately generate a “state of vibration” — a roaring, electric, full-body buzzing-and-rigidity — bring it under conscious control, and then attempt to separate awareness from the physical body.
He gave two separation moves: the “lift-out” (floating gently upward) and the “rotation”/roll-out (turning over as if in bed). Phenomenologically the vibrational state overlaps strongly with sleep paralysis with a hypnagogic charge; the OBE that can follow is a genuine, repeatable experience.
What is not established is Monroe’s interpretation that a literal “Second Body” leaves and travels.
The Method
Monroe’s documented protocol (Ch. 16 §2–3, Ch. 17): Set-up (his “Aids” and “Absolute requisites”).
- Lie down “along a north-south axis, with your head to magnetic north.” Loosen clothing, remove metal/jewelry, keep slightly warmer than comfortable, and arrange limbs so circulation isn’t impeded.
- Darken the room so no light reaches your eyelids — but not fully blacked out (you need a “visual point of reference”).
- Ensure you cannot be disturbed, and set no time limit or deadline.
- Reach deep relaxation, then set intent. Work to Condition D or its equivalent (see the Borderland file) and hold “the deepest level of relaxation possible without weakening your consciousness.” Then mentally repeat five times his pre-session statement: “I will consciously perceive and remember all that I encounter during this relaxation period. I will recall in detail when I am completely awake only those matters that will be beneficial to my physical and mental being.” 2. Begin mouth-breathing and aim the attention. Breathe “through your half-opened mouth.” Concentrate on the blackness, fixing a point about a foot from your forehead, then move it to three feet, then six feet, holding until firm.
- Turn the focus up over your head and “reach for the vibrations.” From the six-foot point, “turn the point 90° upward, on a line parallel to the body axis and reaching out above the head. Reach for the vibrations at that spot. When you find them, mentally pull them back into your head.” (He offers an alternate “two converging lines / pressure point” visualization for the same move.) The result, when it comes, is “a surging, hissing, rhythmically pulsating wave of fiery sparks” that sweeps through the body, “making it rigid and immobile.”
- Acclimatize — don’t panic. When the vibrations come, “do nothing. lie quietly and objectively analyze them until they fade away,” usually in about five minutes. Do not struggle to break the paralysis. After a few times “you will realize you are not being electrocuted.”
- Control the vibrations (manipulation & modulation). Mentally direct the vibrations into a ring or into your head, then push them down to your toes and back up — establishing a wave that sweeps head-to-toe-to-head in about ten seconds. Practise until the wave starts instantly on command. Then smooth and speed them up by mentally “pulsing” them to a higher frequency until the rough shaking gives way to a “steady, solid effect” and finally to mild warmth/tingling. Monroe: “The faster vibration effect is the form that permits dissociation.”
- Practise thought control. In the vibrational state you are “subject to every thought, both willful and involuntary.” Hold as close to “no thought” or a single thought as possible — stray thoughts produce stray results.
- Familiarize with the “Second Body” first (release of extremities). Before full separation, with the vibration going, slowly reach one hand/arm toward an object you know is beyond physical reach (floor, wall), letting the non-physical hand stretch out and “feel” it; or simply clasp your non-physical hands above your chest. Always return the non-physical limb to alignment before shutting off the vibration.
- Separate — Method 1, the “lift-out.” Keeping full thought control, “think of getting lighter, of floating upward, of how nice it would be to float upward.” He stresses the emotional tone: “Be sure to think how nice it would be.” Hold only that, and “you will dissociate and float gently upward.”
- Separate — Method 2, the “rotation”/roll-out. Under the same conditions, “slowly try to turn over, just as if you were turning over in bed,” twisting head and shoulders first, with no help from arms or legs, moving slowly and firmly. Turn until you sense you’ve gone 180° (“face to face with your physical body”), stop the rotation by thinking it, then think of floating up and away. Monroe advises trying the lift-out first, then choosing whichever is easiest for you.
- Return. To come back, “decrease the vibrations” by slowly attempting to move the physical body, opening the physical eyes, and deliberately bringing the senses back. Lie still a few minutes for “full and complete return.” (Sourcing note: the north-south/head-to-magnetic-north set-up, the mouth-breathing, the 1ft/3ft/6ft focus and 90° “reach,” the five-times affirmation, the head-to-toe wave timing, the ~27 Hz figure, the lift-out and rotation moves, and the warning passages are all Monroe’s documented instructions, paraphrased with short attributed quotes.)
Source & Lineage
Robert Monroe (1915–1995) developed this from his own spontaneous OBEs beginning 1958, publishing Journeys Out of the Body in 1971. → (Robert Monroe).
He founded The Monroe Institute and codified the method into the audio-assisted Hemi-Sync / Focus 10 training (see companion file). His induction parallels older astral projection literature (Muldoon & Carrington’s The Projection of the Astral Body, 1929; Sylvan Muldoon’s “vibratory state”) and the OBE accounts later studied academically by Charles Tart, Susan Blackmore, and others.
The Traditions' versions
Astral projection (Muldoon/Carrington, Theosophy) — the “vibratory state” and projection of an “astral body”; Monroe’s direct predecessor in describing the buzzing onset.
- WILD / lucid dreaming — wake-initiated entry across the sleep boundary, often with vibrations and sleep paralysis; a naturalistic cousin of the lift-out.
- Sleep-paralysis “exit” techniques — modern OBE practitioners use the SP onset (the very vibrations/immobility Monroe describes) as the launch point.
- Yogic/Tantric “subtle body” practices — energy-body cultivation that frames similar sensations metaphysically.
Common refinements
Panicking at the vibrations. The single biggest derailer. Monroe’s instruction is to lie still and observe; fear collapses the state (and is the same fear that makes sleep paralysis frightening).
- Forcing the body to move. Struggling to break free just wakes you. Use the gentle lift-out/rotation instead.
- Letting thoughts wander. Stray thoughts produce stray, “undesirable” results in this state; cultivate single-pointed or no-thought attention first.
- Skipping Condition D. Trying this while merely tired tends to end in sleep. Build the relaxation ladder first.
- Neglecting the emotional tone. Monroe is explicit that the anticipatory pleasure (“how nice it would be”) is what triggers the lift-out — flat mechanical intent works less well.
- Treating it as proof of travel. Don’t let a vivid experience override the absence of controlled evidence; explore openly without over-claiming.
