Scrying
To relax attention onto a featureless reflective surface until the visual system produces spontaneous hypnagogic imagery, then to observe, engage, and record those images as a channel for the imagination and subconscious.
Scrying in 6 lines: Dim, quiet room; a dark featureless surface (black mirror, dark water, crystal). Calm the breath, state your intent. Gaze softly through the surface — no hard staring, blink normally. Wait for it to cloud, then let images arise and just observe; engage and ask. Write everything down at once. Deliberately close and ground. Hold the visions as your own imagination, not external fact.
What it is
Scrying is the old art of seeing inner images by gazing into a formless surface. DuQuette defines it plainly: “the art of inducing hypnagogic visions while staring at an amorphous visual surface” — an obsidian or black mirror, a crystal, a bowl of dark water, embers, or any low-detail field.
In Enochian Vision Magick it is the core perceptual skill behind Dee and Kelley’s whole system: the magician relaxes the gaze until the visual field destabilises and spontaneous images, scenes, and “presences” arise, which are then observed and recorded.
DuQuette presents it as a learnable faculty, scaffolded by preparation and, in the Enochian system, by recited “Calls” that set the intent.
The Method
- Prepare a dark, quiet, dim space. Low, steady light — a candle off to the side, never reflecting directly in the surface. Remove distractions; silence devices.
- Choose a speculum (scrying surface): a black mirror, polished obsidian, a crystal ball, a bowl of dark water, or smouldering embers. The point is a surface with no fixed detail for the eye to lock onto.
- Settle the body and breath. Sit comfortably with the speculum at a relaxed gazing distance. Breathe slowly until calm and still — DuQuette stresses preparation before scrying.
- Set the intent. State (silently or aloud) what you seek. In the Enochian method this is the function of the Calls — recited invocations that raise and direct the consciousness before vision; outside Enochian, a simple clear statement of purpose serves.
- Gaze softly into the surface — do not stare hard. Let the eyes go slightly unfocused, as if looking through the speculum. Blink normally. The goal is a relaxed, defocused, open attention, not a strained glare.
- Wait for the surface to “cloud” or shift. With sustained soft gaze the field commonly clouds, darkens, swirls, or seems to develop mist or light — the first sign the visual system is destabilising. Don’t force it; allow it.
- Let images arise and observe them. Spontaneous hypnagogic imagery — shapes, colours, faces, scenes, figures — emerges. Watch without grabbing. As skill grows you can mentally step into a scene, ask questions, and interact (in the Aethyr work, “rising through” successive realms).
- Engage and record. Note what appears, ask for clarification, and afterward write everything down immediately — content fades like a dream. DuQuette frames failures or blanks not as defeats but as signposts to areas needing personal growth.
- Close and ground. Deliberately end the session, return attention to the room and body (feet on floor, a few normal breaths, note the date/place). This re-anchors ordinary awareness. (Sourcing note: the definition of scrying and the speculum list are DuQuette’s own (short quotation marked). The relaxed-gaze → clouding → spontaneous-imagery → observe-and-record arc, the role of the Calls/intent, and the “failures signal growth” stance reflect his presentation in Enochian Vision Magick. The grounding step is standard responsible practice. Faithful paraphrase; no long reproduction of any Call.)
Source & Lineage
The practice descends from Dr. John Dee and Edward Kelley (Elizabethan England), whose angelic/Enochian system Kelley accessed by scrying into a “shew-stone.” DuQuette (b.
1948) → reconstructed and systematised this in Enochian Vision Magick (2008), making a famously opaque system practicable. Scrying itself is far older and cross-cultural (crystal-gazing, mirror divination, hydromancy).
The Traditions' versions
Crystal-gazing / mirror scrying — the broad folk and ritual-magic family; same defocused-gaze mechanism.
- Ganzfeld procedure — featureless visual/auditory field reliably producing imagery and altered perception; the lab cousin.
- Hypnagogic imagery cultivation — courting the threshold-of-sleep image stream (Edison/Dalí “nap” tricks).
- Pathworking / guided visionary journeys — structured inner travel through symbolic landscapes.
- Tattwa skrying (DuQuette) — the gateway-symbol variant; a natural precursor to surface scrying.
Common refinements
Hard staring. A tense glare blocks it. The skill is soft, through-the-surface gazing with normal blinking.
- Bright light or reflections. Any sharp reflection in the speculum gives the eye something to fix on and prevents clouding. Keep light dim and off-axis.
- Forcing or grabbing images. Trying too hard, or snatching at a faint image, dissolves it. Allow; observe.
- Not recording immediately. Visions evaporate like dreams. Write at once.
- Skipping the close/ground. Leaving the trance undefined can leave you spacey; deliberately re-anchor.
- Believing it too literally. Taking every figure as a real external being invites self-deception. Hold content as meaningful imagination.
