The Middle Pillar Ritual & Circulation of the Body of Light

Build and circulate a felt current of ‘light/energy’ along the body’s vertical midline by vibrating five divine names at five centres, then sweep it around the aura — to relax, energise, balance, and establish the practitioner as a stable conduit before further magical work.

Middle Pillar: Relax (and LBRP). Standing tall, breathe slowly. Build and vibrate a sphere of light at each centre, top to bottom — Kether/crown: “Eheieh”; Daath/throat: “YHVH Elohim”; Tiphareth/heart: “YHVH Eloah ve-Daath”; Yesod/pelvis: “Shaddai El Chai”; Malkuth/feet: “Adonai ha-Aretz” — running a shaft of light down from one to the next until a full pillar glows crown-to-feet.
Circulation of the Body of Light: Then sweep the light down the front / up the back, down one side / up the other, and fountain it up the centre and down all around you, several cycles. Store the light in the heart, breathe, close, and record in the diary.

The Middle Pillar is the central energy-cultivation ritual of Western ceremonial magic, and in Modern Magick Donald Michael Kraig teaches it as the student’s daily power-building practice once the Relaxation Ritual, vibration, and LBRP are in place.

You stand or sit, relax, and awaken five “centres” running down the midline of your body — crown, throat/nape, heart, genitals, feet — by visualising a sphere of light at each and vibrating the divine name belonging to it, so a shaft of light grows downward through you from head to feet.

Then, in the Circulation of the Body of Light, you take that accumulated light and sweep it around the outside of your body in coordinated patterns to “strengthen the aura.” Read magically it builds and balances vital energy; read plainly it is a potent guided practice of slow breath, resonant toning, and head-to-foot body-imagery that reliably relaxes, focuses, and energises.

It is closely related to — but distinct in detail and pedagogy from — the versions taught by Regardie, Dion Fortune, and the Golden Dawn corpus.

From Modern Magick, Lesson Two (basic) and Lesson Three (circulation): Preliminaries

  1. Do the Relaxation Ritual, and (once learned) the LBRP, to settle and clear your space. Stand erect (or sit upright), breathing slowly and fully. Building the Middle Pillar — five centres, top to bottom. At each centre: visualise a sphere of light, feel it strongly, then vibrate its divine name (using the vibratory formula — a long resonant intonation, several times) until the centre glows vividly; then run a shaft of light down to the next centre.
  2. Kether — crown (just above the head). Raise awareness to a brilliant sphere of white light just above the crown — “the divine core of your Being.” Vibrate “Eheieh” (eh-HEH-yeh) slowly, three or four times, “until it is the only thought in your conscious mind.”
  3. Daath — nape of neck / throat. Bring a shaft of light down to a smaller sphere at the throat/nape. Vibrate “YHVH Elohim” (yode-heh-vav-heh el-oh-HEEM). (Daath is the conscious link between divinity and ego.)
  4. Tiphareth — heart / solar plexus centre. Carry the light down to a sphere at the centre of the chest. Vibrate “YHVH Eloah ve-Daath” (yode-heh-vav-heh el-OH-ah v’-DAH-ath).
  5. Yesod — genital region. Bring the shaft down to a sphere at the pelvic/genital centre. Vibrate “Shaddai El Chai” (shah-DYE el-CHYE; ch a guttural as in German “Bach”).
  6. Malkuth — feet and ankles. Send the light down to a sphere at the feet. Vibrate “Adonai ha-Aretz” (ah-doh-NYE ha-AH-retz). You now feel the full pillar of light from crown to feet. Circulation of the Body of Light (Lesson Three). With the pillar established and bright:
  7. Down the front, up the back. On an out-breath, will the light to flow from Kether down the front of the body to the feet; on the in-breath, up the back to the crown. Repeat several cycles, feeling it bathe and strengthen the outside of the body (the “aura”).
  8. Side to side. Then circulate it down one side and up the other, several cycles.
  9. The fountain / ascending spiral. Finally, draw light up the central pillar to the crown and let it fountain down all around the outside of the body to the feet, then up the centre again — a continuous circulating “egg” of light surrounding you.
  10. Store and close. Let the circulation settle, store the energy in the Tiphareth (heart) centre, take a few deep breaths, and return alert. Record the session in your Magickal Diary. (Sourcing note: the five-centre top-to-bottom structure, the divine names and their pronunciations as Kraig gives them, the use of the vibratory formula, and the three circulation patterns plus heart-storage close are Kraig’s documented Middle Pillar and Circulation instructions, faithfully paraphrased with short quoted phrases. Exact spellings of names follow the Golden Dawn/Regardie lineage Kraig uses.)

Kraig teaches the basic Middle Pillar in Lesson Two and the Advanced Middle Pillar / Circulation of the Body of Light in Lesson Three of Modern Magick (Llewellyn, 1988; Twelve Lessons, 2010).

The ritual originates in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and was given its classic modern form by Israel Regardie (The Middle Pillar, 1938); Dion Fortune and Mathers also worked the central-pillar scheme of the Tree of Life.

Kraig’s contribution is the graded, beginner-clear protocol that integrates his vibratory formula and relaxation ritual into a daily energy practice for the solitary student. → (Donald Michael Kraig node); lineage; uses and.

Regardie’s Middle Pillar — the canonical modern source Kraig follows; same five centres and names.

  • Dion Fortune / Mathers central-pillar work — earlier Tree-of-Life midline schemes.,
  • Microcosmic Orbit (Taoist) — circulating felt energy up the spine and down the front; the Circulation of the Body of Light is a strikingly close Western parallel.
  • Chakra activation / kundalini visualisation — awakening a vertical series of body centres with breath, sound (bija mantra), and light-imagery.
  • Qigong standing energy circulation — building and orbiting felt “qi” around the body with breath and intention.

Weak or rushed vibration. The names must be vibrated (felt resonance), not muttered; this is where most of the effect comes from. Master the vibratory formula first.

  • Skipping the felt centre before moving on. Build each sphere until you feel it; don’t race down the pillar.
  • No relaxation/banishing first. Doing it tense or in a scattered state gives thin results — open with the Relaxation Ritual (and LBRP once learned).
  • Forgetting to store and close. Pooling the light in the heart and re-grounding prevents the wired, spacey feeling some report after energy work.
  • Forcing sensations. If you feel little at first, keep the imagery and breath steady; sensitivity builds over weeks. Don’t strain.
  • Over-doing it. Long, intense daily energy work can over-stimulate; ten to fifteen minutes is plenty. Log results in the diary to see what dose suits you.
