Mantram Repetition

To calm the mind and steady the emotions by silently repeating a chosen holy word or phrase throughout the day.

Beginner Throughout the day Eight-Point Program

The mantram, or holy name, is a core practice in Eknath Easwaran’s Eight-Point Program, drawn from his Indian heritage and taught alongside passage meditation.

A mantram is a short, spiritually charged word or phrase, such as a divine name, that is repeated silently in spare moments and in times of agitation. Repetition gives the restless mind a steadying anchor and, by Easwaran’s principle that we become what we hold in mind, gradually orients the whole person.

Step 1 — Choose a mantram.
Select a short, established holy word or phrase that carries meaning for you, and commit to using just that one. Step 2 — Repeat in spare moments. Silently repeat the mantram while walking, waiting, falling asleep, or doing routine tasks that do not need full attention. Step 3 — Use it under stress. When anger, fear, or anxiety rises, turn to the mantram and repeat it steadily until the agitation settles. Step 4 — Keep it silent and inward. Let the repetition stay quiet and internal, a gentle background current rather than a forced effort. Step 5 — Return again and again. Whenever you notice the mind has drifted into worry, simply begin the mantram again, building the habit over weeks and months.
