The Power Back of Suggestion

Make affirmations and suggestions actually take effect by contacting the living feeling behind the idea — not just saying the words — so that ‘subjective’ (felt) thought is engaged rather than empty ‘objective’ repetition.

Intermediate Folded into any affirmation or suggestion you already use New Thought
An affirmation is just a vehicle. It only works when you feel the living inside of the idea as you say it. Don’t say the word “health” — sink into the felt quality of health. Talk through the idea, not about it; place yourself inside the state. If a statement falls flat, you stayed on the surface — redo it from the feeling. Train by getting into the real life of every thought you think.

Larson’s diagnosis of why affirmations so often fail — and his fix. He splits thought into two kinds (Ch. VI): objective thought is surface, intellectual, “mind-picturing where there is no feeling,” and it “does not affect the conditions of mind and body to any extent”; subjective thought “has depth of feeling, that goes beneath the surface… the thought of the heart.” A suggestion, he says, is only a vehicle: “a suggestion takes effect only when we exercise the power that is back of suggestion… and that other power is nothing more nor less than the real life of that idea which the suggestion intends to convey.” So the practice is not a new affirmation — it’s a way of doing any affirmation correctly: while you say it, you reach into and feel the living interior of the idea itself.

“When you think health, you will produce health in your system if you feel the real or interior life of health at the time.”

  1. Notice the two modes. Say your statement once flatly (objective) — just words. Then resolve to give it “depth of feeling.” Larson: “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he” — heart, not surface.
  2. Reach for the inner life of the idea. “If you can actually feel the power of this interior idea of health when you are giving the suggestion, you are in mental touch with the power back of that suggestion.” Don’t picture the word “health” — sink into the felt quality of health, harmony, happiness.
  3. Talk through the idea, not about it. His test case: two people give the same proposition; you accept one and ignore the other because “the one is talking about his proposition, the other is talking through his proposition… The mind of the one goes on the outside of his arguments… the mind of the other goes through the real inner life.” Apply this to your own self-suggestion: go through it.
  4. Place yourself inside the state. “When you place yourself in the mental world of happiness whenever you are thinking happiness, you will actually produce happiness in your mind, because you are applying the power that is back of the thought.”
  5. Train it by living your ideas. “We can learn to use this power by training ourselves to get into the real life of every idea and every thought that we may try to think or convey… try to feel consciously and constantly the real life and the real truth that is contained in those ideas.”
  6. If it falls flat, you stayed on the surface. “Any thought or suggestion that conveys simply the external form, invariably falls flat. There is nothing to it.” Re-do it from the feeling.

Repeating words with no feeling. This is exactly the “objective,” empty mode Larson says “falls flat.” The whole point is the feeling behind it.

  • Manufacturing a fake feeling. Larson says contact the inner life of the idea, not fake an emotion. If you can’t feel health, start from a smaller true feeling (ease, relief) and deepen.
  • Picturing the symbol, not the state. Don’t visualise the word or a stock image; sink into the felt quality.
  • Trying to broadcast it outward. Keep the work where it’s defensible — on entering and being changed by the state — rather than on projecting force at people or events.
