The 6-Phase Meditation

Move through six guided stages — compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, future vision, the perfect day, and a blessing — to cultivate both inner peace and goal-directed motivation in one short daily sitting.

6-Phase in brief: (1) Compassion — radiate kindness; (2) Gratitude — feel thanks across life/work/self; (3) Forgiveness — let go of a grievance; (4) Vision — vividly picture your life ~3 years out; (5) Perfect Day — rehearse today going beautifully; (6) Blessing — feel supported and held. ~15 minutes, daily.

The 6-Phase Meditation is Vishen Lakhiani’s deliberately non-mystical daily practice that strings together six short, structured stages instead of asking you to “empty the mind.” Lakhiani’s pitch: he cherry-picked psycho-spiritual practices with research behind them, dropped the dogma, and arranged them into one logical ~15-minute sequence.

The first three phases ground you in the present (compassion, gratitude, forgiveness); the last three pull you toward the future (a three-year vision, a perfect day today, and a closing blessing of support). It’s a manifestation-flavoured meditation that pairs heart-warming inner states with concrete goal-direction.

The six phases, in order:

  1. Compassion / Connection. Generate the feeling of compassion — moving “from judgement to caring, from isolation to connection.” Many practitioners radiate kindness outward to a person, then to all beings (a loving-kindness move).
  2. Gratitude. Bring to mind things you’re grateful for. Lakhiani’s framing: a few items each from your personal life, your work/career, and yourself. Feel the gratitude, don’t just list it.
  3. Forgiveness / Peace. Bring to mind someone you have a charge against, and work toward letting go of the desire for revenge or ill-will — softening the grievance to restore inner peace. (Lakhiani frames forgiveness as a decision and a relief, not condoning.)
  4. Future Dreaming / Vision. Vividly imagine your life roughly three years out across domains (relationships, health, work, experiences) — a sensory, emotionally rich “blueprint” of the future you want.
  5. The Perfect Day. Zoom in to today: picture today unfolding perfectly, in a way that serves the three-year vision. This is daily mental rehearsal — priming the day with intention.
  6. The Blessing / Support. Close by feeling supported — by a higher power, the universe, your future self, or simply your own resolve — a sense that you’re held and that the day is blessed. (Sourcing note: faithful paraphrase of the publicly described structure; no copyrighted guided-script text reproduced. Phase labels vary slightly across Lakhiani’s renderings — e.g., “Connection” / “Compassion,” “Future Dreaming” / “Vision” — but the six-step arc is stable.)

Vishen Lakhiani founded Mindvalley, a personal-growth education company; he developed the 6-Phase around 2013 and codified it in The 6 Phase Meditation Method (2022).

The practice is an explicit synthesis: its components map directly onto older traditions — loving-kindness/compassion (Buddhism), gratitude (positive psychology and devotional practice), forgiveness (contemplative and therapeutic), and creative visualization / mental rehearsal (New Thought and sports psychology).

Its lineage in the manifestation stream sits alongside Dispenza-style mental rehearsal.

Rushing it into a checklist. Each phase needs felt emotion (real gratitude, real compassion), not a mental box-tick.

  • Skipping the present-focused phases to get to “manifesting.” The first three are what make the vision land cleanly.
  • Future vision with no daily action. Use Phase 5 (perfect day) to translate the dream into today’s concrete steps — then actually do them.
  • Forcing forgiveness. If a grievance is too raw, soften it partway rather than faking resolution; deep wounds may need more than a meditation.
  • Treating the blessing as magic. Held as felt support/confidence it’s helpful; held as a spell it overreaches.
