Mental Transmutation
Deliberately convert an unwanted mental state into its opposite by ‘raising the vibration’ along the same scale — fear toward courage, hate toward love — by concentrating on, and polarizing at, the desired pole.
Name the unwanted state and its true opposite on the same scale (Fear–Courage, Hate–Love). Don’t fight the bad pole. Concentrate fully on the desired pole, feel its quality, and “raise the vibration” up the line, degree by degree, until you occupy it. Use it to master moods and rebuild disposition.
What it is
The Kybalion (1908) calls Mental Transmutation “the art of changing one’s own mental states and conditions” and treats it as the practical master-key of the whole Hermetic system. Its engine is the Principle of Polarity: “everything has its pair of opposites,” and crucially those opposites are the same thing in different degree — fear and courage, hate and love, are two ends of one scale, not two separate things.
Because they are one scale, you can travel along it. To get rid of an unwanted state you do not fight it directly; you concentrate on its opposite pole and “raise the vibration” toward that pole until you occupy it.
The Method
- Name the state and find its scale. Identify the unwanted state and the pole you want instead. The two must be opposite ends of one thing: Fear–Courage, Hate–Love, Despair–Hope. Per the text, “Love may turn into Hate and likewise Hate may be transformed into Love, by changing its polarity.”
- Do not attack the unwanted pole. You cannot “kill” fear by struggling with fear. The instruction is to “destroy an undesirable rate of mental vibration” by “concentrat[ing] upon the opposite pole to that which you desire to suppress.”
- Polarize at the desired pole. Put attention fully on the pole you want — its felt quality, its posture, its inner tone — and hold it. “Kill out the undesirable by changing its polarity.”
- Raise the vibration along the line. Move deliberately up the scale, e.g. “raising mental vibrations along the line of Fear-Courage,” until “filled with the highest degree of Courage and Fearlessness.” The shift is gradual and willed, degree by degree — “from state to state; degree to degree. pole to pole; vibration to vibration.”
- Use it to master mood and character. Applied as habit: “By changing your polarity you may master your moods, change your mental states, remake your disposition, and build up character.” The Kybalion calls this the application behind “much of the Mental Mastery of the advanced Hermetics.” (Sourcing note: quoted phrases are from Chapter X “Polarity” and Chapter XIV “Mental Transmutation” of The Kybalion (1908); the numbered structure is an attributed paraphrase.)
Source & Lineage
The Kybalion: Hermetic Philosophy (1908), published anonymously under “Three Initiates” and almost universally attributed to New Thought author William Walker Atkinson.
It claims to distill an ancient Hermetic oral tradition; scholars read it as an early-20th-century New Thought synthesis in Hermetic dress. Mental Transmutation via Polarity is the practical heart of the book and a direct ancestor of the modern “raise your vibration / shift your state” vocabulary.
The Traditions' versions
Stoicism / CBT: changing the judgment about a thing changes the feeling — reappraisal along an appraisal dimension.
- Buddhism: the pratipaksha / antidote practice — cultivating the opposing wholesome state (loving-kindness against hatred, courage against fear).
- New Thought: Atkinson’s own “thought-vibration” drills and the affirmation traditions that replace a negative dominant note with a positive one.
- DBT: “opposite action” — deliberately acting from the emotion opposite to the unwarranted one.
Common refinements
Fighting the unwanted pole. The whole method is not to wrestle fear but to occupy courage. Struggling with the negative keeps you polarized at it.
- Picking a false opposite. The poles must be the same scale. “Calm” is not the true opposite of “guilt”; choose the genuine far end of the one dimension.
- Expecting one leap. It is “degree to degree” — move up the scale rather than demanding an instant jump.
- Confusing it with denial. Transmutation is changing where you stand on the scale, not pretending the unwanted state never existed.
