TT Assessment & 'Unruffling'
Describe, neutrally, the signature Therapeutic-Touch ritual: passing the hands a few inches above another person’s body to ‘assess’ and then ‘smooth’ (unruffle) a supposed energy field — and state clearly what controlled testing found.
Assessment & Unruffling in 5 lines: From a centered, caring state, the practitioner passes their hands a few inches over the body to “sense” an energy field, then makes smoothing sweeps to “clear” it, then “balances” it. But the field has never been demonstrated — practitioners couldn’t even detect it under blinded test (Rosa et al., JAMA 1998, at chance). Any comfort comes from relaxation, attention, expectancy, and caring touch — not field work. Documented here neutrally; not a treatment.
What it is
After centering and forming a caring intent, the Therapeutic Touch practitioner performs the method’s most recognisable gestures: assessment and “unruffling.” With the patient seated or lying down, the practitioner moves their hands slowly a few inches above the body, head to feet, claiming to sense irregularities in a “human energy field” (warmth, tingling, “congestion,” asymmetry).
They then make smoothing, sweeping hand-passes — “unruffling” — said to clear or rebalance that field, followed by a balancing/treatment phase. This entry documents the ritual neutrally, and states plainly up front: the energy field this ritual claims to sense and smooth has not been shown to exist. Whatever comfort people report comes from ordinary causes — relaxation, attention, expectancy, calm presence, gentle touch — not from field detection (see Why It Works and empirical status).
The Method
As described in Krieger’s The Therapeutic Touch, the phases that follow centering are roughly:
- Assessment. Holding the hands a few inches off the body, the practitioner passes them slowly and symmetrically from head to feet, attending to any felt cues they interpret as the patient’s “energy field.”
- Unruffling (clearing). Using long, sweeping downward hand-passes — as if smoothing the air around the body — the practitioner aims to “clear” perceived congestion or imbalance in the field.
- Treatment / balancing. The practitioner then “directs and modulates” the supposed field, sometimes resting hands lightly on or near specific areas, intending to rebalance it.
- Reassessment and close. They pass the hands again to check for “symmetry,” then end, with the patient resting. (This is a faithful, neutral summary of the ritual form as taught, not an endorsement and not a reproduction of copyrighted training material.)
Source & Lineage
Krieger and Dora Kunz developed TT in the early 1970s; Krieger codified it in The Therapeutic Touch (1979) and taught it widely within nursing. The hand-pass gestures echo the much older “laying on of hands,” reframed as secular, non-contact “energy” work.
It sits in the same family as other hands-near-the-body modalities in this library — Reiki, Quantum-Touch, Reconnective Healing — all sharing the unproven premise of a manipulable energy field, and all best explained by relaxation, attention, and expectancy.
Common refinements
Mistaking sensations for a field. Warmth and tingling in the hands are normal products of attention, stillness, and suggestion — not evidence of detecting anyone’s energy.
- Reading “improvement” as proof. Relaxation and symptom fluctuation are expected with or without TT; they do not validate the field claim.
- Making clinical claims. Telling a patient their field was “congested” and is now “balanced” presents an unproven model as fact; keep claims honest.
- If you value the experience, keep the genuinely helpful ingredients — calm, slow movement, quiet attention, gentle welcome touch — and drop the energy-field explanation.
