Heart Lock-In

Build the capacity to hold and radiate a heartfelt positive emotion long enough to lock into and sustain a coherent physiological state.

Beginner 5–15 min (longer sessions optional) Psychophysiology / HRV Biofeedback
Heart Lock-In: Settle attention in your heart and breathe slowly through the chest, ~5 sec in / 5 sec out. Activate a real feeling of appreciation or care and hold it steadily. Then radiate that warmth through your own body and outward to people you love. Stay with it for five to fifteen minutes.

Heart Lock-In is HeartMath’s longer, sustaining practice. Where Quick Coherence shifts you into coherence quickly and Freeze-Frame applies it to a stressor, Heart Lock-In is about holding a heartfelt positive emotion for an extended stretch — typically five to fifteen minutes — and deliberately radiating it.

HeartMath describes the aim as “building the capacity to sustain heartfelt positive emotions.” The radiating step is what gives the technique its name: by sending the feeling outward — through your own body, then to others — you “lock in” to the feeling, and therefore the coherent state, for longer than you could just holding it inwardly.

HeartMath teaches Heart Lock-In in three steps:

  1. Heart-focused breathing. Focus your attention in the area of the heart. Imagine your breath flowing in and out through the heart or chest area, breathing a little slower and deeper than usual (around five seconds in, five seconds out).
  2. Activate and sustain. Activate a regenerative feeling — appreciation, care, or compassion — and hold it. The emphasis here, unlike the briefer techniques, is on sustaining the feeling steadily over minutes.
  3. Radiate. Radiate that renewing feeling: first throughout your own body and cells, then outward to people you love and to others or to a situation you care about. This radiating component is treated as essential to maintaining the state. Sessions usually run five to fifteen minutes, though longer is fine. A biofeedback device (emWave / Inner Balance) can show the coherent rhythm and help you learn to hold it. (Sourcing note: the three-step structure is HeartMath’s published Heart Lock-In technique, described faithfully rather than reproduced verbatim.)

Heart Lock-In comes from Doc Childre and the HeartMath Institute (Boulder Creek, California), developed through the Institute’s HRV research and popularized in The HeartMath Solution (Childre & Martin, 1999).

It sits in the modern contemplative-science / biofeedback lineage. Its “radiate care outward” structure closely parallels older loving-kindness and devotional radiance practices, though HeartMath frames it in physiological rather than spiritual terms.

The underlying move — generate warmth and send it outward, sustained over time — is ancient and widespread: - Quick Coherence Technique — the same heart-focus + feeling core, but brief rather than sustained-and-radiating.

  • Loving-kindness (metta) meditation — systematically radiating goodwill to self, loved ones, and all beings; the closest classical analogue.
  • The Inner Smile (Chia) — directing a warm, smiling feeling through the organs and body.
  • Coherent / resonance breathing — the slow-breathing engine underneath, without the emotion-radiating layer.

Thinking the feeling instead of feeling it. Sustained coherence depends on the emotion being genuinely re-felt, not narrated.

  • Straining to hold it. Effortful gripping breaks the relaxed warmth that produces coherence; let the feeling rest rather than forcing it.
  • Skipping the radiate step. It is the mechanism that keeps you locked in; dropping it tends to let the state fade.
  • Believing the transmission claims literally. Use the radiating as a focus aid; treat the heart-field/global-coherence metaphysics as unproven.
  • Treating it as therapy. It builds everyday resilience; it is not a treatment for clinical conditions.
