Quantum-Touch Body-Sweep & Intention
Sweep attention slowly up through the body to build a strong felt sensation, then combine it with focused intention to ‘direct the energy’ to a chosen area — the attention-and-intention half of Quantum-Touch (‘energy follows thought’).
Body-sweep & intention in 5 lines: Start at the feet and slowly sweep attention up through the whole body, noticing every sensation. Repeat until it’s strong and pools in the hands. Form a clear, gentle intention for where it should go — “energy follows thought.” Hold light touch and keep attention/intent there, relaxed. The attention effect is real; the “directing healing energy” and quantum claims are not — and it never replaces medical care.
What it is
This is the attention-and-intention core of Quantum-Touch, founded by Richard Gordon: the practitioner sweeps attention slowly up through the body (“the sweep”) to build a strong felt sensation, then holds a focused intention to direct that sensation — what Gordon calls the “energy” — toward a chosen area, on themselves or another.
His slogan for this step is “energy follows thought.” Where the breath is the amplifier, the sweep-and-intention is the steering. State it plainly: the sweep is a focused-attention (interoceptive) exercise and the “directing” is held intention/expectation.
Both genuinely shape what you feel and where you feel it. The further claim — that this moves a literal healing energy that intention aims like a beam — is unproven, and “quantum” is metaphor (see Why It Works and empirical status).
The Method
As Gordon teaches it in Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal:
- Begin the sweep. Place attention at your feet. Slowly move (“sweep”) your awareness upward through the legs, torso, arms, and head, deliberately noticing every sensation you can — tingling, warmth, heaviness, “buzz.” A common variant is the 18-inch sweep: longer strokes of attention/touch from feet to knees, then up to the head, then down the shoulders to the hands.
- Build the sensation. Repeat the sweep, often paired with the breath (inhale while sweeping up), until the felt sensation is strong and you can feel it pooling in the hands.
- Form the intention. Hold a clear, gentle intention for what you want — e.g. that the energy gather, flow, and the chosen area “entrain” to a higher vibration. Gordon’s framing: “energy follows thought” — where attention and intent go, the felt energy goes.
- Direct and hold. Place light touch on or near the area and keep attention and intent there, staying relaxed, letting the sensation “run” rather than forcing it.
- Notice and adjust. Observe any change in sensation and gently renew the sweep/intention as it fades. (This is a faithful summary of the method as taught, not a reproduction of copyrighted training material.)
Source & Lineage
Richard Gordon developed Quantum-Touch from his polarity therapy background and his apprenticeship with Bob Rasmussen, codifying it in Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal (1999; expanded 2006).
The body-sweep is a close cousin of classical interoceptive body-scan practices (Buddhist vedana noticing, yoga-nidra-style sweeps, the 61-points relaxation), and the “energy follows thought” directing step echoes the intention-led move shared across the energy-psychology cluster (Kinslow’s QE Intention, Bartlett’s two-point).
Its distinctive signature is using the sweep specifically to build a felt charge to be directed.
Common refinements
Rushing the sweep. The sensation builds with slow, thorough attention; a fast skim produces little.
- Straining the intention. Forced, anxious “willing it to work” tightens the body and undercuts the relaxation that does the actual work — hold the intent lightly.
- Treating the felt build-up as proof. Stronger sensation under focused attention is exactly what attention does; it is not evidence that energy is being directed.
- Making medical claims. Use it as an attention/relaxation practice and keep claims modest.
