Shapiro's Lightstream Technique
To reduce acute distress by giving a disturbing body sensation concrete sensory form, then imagining a chosen healing-colour light flowing through it until the sensation eases or dissolves.
Lightstream in 6 lines: Find where the upset sits in your body. Give it a shape, size, colour, temperature, texture, and sound. Pick your healing colour. Imagine that colour as light pouring in through the top of your head and into the sensation, vibrating in and around it — and watch the sensation change. Keep going until it eases or dissolves, then let the light fill your whole body. Notice that you can soothe yourself this way, breathe, and come back to the room.
What it is
The Lightstream Technique is one of the stress-reduction tools Francine Shapiro, originator of EMDR, presents for self-help in Getting Past Your Past (2012); in clinical EMDR it is a Phase 2 / closure exercise for calming a client at the end of a session.
You take a disturbing feeling, find where it sits in the body, give that sensation a concrete form (shape, size, colour, temperature, texture, sound), then imagine a healing-coloured light pouring in through the top of your head, flowing to the sensation, and vibrating in and around it until the sensation shifts, softens, or dissolves.
Shapiro describes it as blending elements of ancient meditation with imagery/NLP-style work — a portable way to self-soothe and down-regulate, not to reprocess trauma.
The Method
Shapiro’s script, adapted for self-administration:
- Locate the disturbance in the body. Bring up the upsetting feeling and notice where you feel it physically — chest, throat, gut, shoulders.
- Give the sensation a concrete form. Question it sense by sense, filling in each blank: If it had a shape, what would it be? A size? A colour? A temperature? A texture? A sound? Note each answer. (This is the NLP-flavoured step that makes the diffuse feeling concrete and workable.)
- Choose your healing colour. Ask: What colour do I associate with healing? Pick the colour that feels right.
- Bring in the lightstream. Imagine that healing colour as a light entering through the top of your head, supplied limitlessly from above. Direct it down to the sensation in your body.
- Let the light vibrate in and around the sensation. Picture the light surrounding and penetrating the sensation, vibrating through it. As it does, notice what happens to the sensation’s shape, size, colour, temperature, texture, or sound — let it change.
- Continue until it eases. Keep the light flowing and keep checking the sensation until it has lessened, changed for the better, or dissolved.
- Flood the whole body and integrate. Once the tension is gone or reduced, let the colored light spread into every part of your body, filling you. Take in that you have the power to calm and soothe yourself this way.
- Return to the room. Take a breath, become aware of your surroundings, and gently open your eyes / come back to the present. (Sourcing note: the locate-the-sensation, shape/size/colour/temperature/texture/sound elicitation, favourite-healing-colour, light-through-the-crown, vibrate-until-it-changes, whole-body integration, and return steps are Shapiro’s documented Lightstream script as presented for self-help. Faithful paraphrase; no long quotation.)
Source & Lineage
Francine Shapiro (1948-2019), originator of EMDR (1987). The Lightstream appears in her clinical EMDR texts as a closure / stress-management script and was carried into Getting Past Your Past (2012) for lay readers.
It openly fuses two older streams: guided meditation / energy-and-light visualisation (healing light entering the crown is a staple of many contemplative and energy traditions) and NLP submodality work (changing a feeling by altering its imagined sensory qualities).
Within EMDR it sits alongside the Safe/Calm Place and Spiral Technique as a self-control resource.
The Traditions' versions
Healing-light visualisation (yoga, qigong, Christian/contemplative imagery) — light/energy entering the crown and flowing through the body; the meditative ancestor.
- NLP submodality shifting — transforming an inner experience by changing its imagined size/colour/shape/sound; the technical ancestor of the “give it a form, then change it” move.
- Body scan / mindfulness of sensation — non-reactive attention to where feeling lives in the body; shares step 1.
- Yoga nidra / autogenic warmth imagery — imagined warmth/colour spreading through the body for relaxation.
- Shapiro’s Spiral Technique — its sibling: also locates the sensation, then transforms it (by spin instead of light).
Common refinements
Rushing the sensory inventory. The power comes from genuinely answering shape/size/colour/etc.; skipping it leaves the feeling diffuse and unworkable.
- Forcing the sensation to vanish. Let the light invite change and observe what happens, rather than willing it gone (forcing tends to backfire).
- Picking a colour by analysis. Use the colour you intuitively link to healing, not the “correct” one.
- Stopping at the sensation. Don’t skip the whole-body integration and the explicit “I can calm myself” recognition — that’s part of the benefit.
- Treating temporary relief as a cure. It manages a moment; it isn’t processing or medical treatment.
- Using it on overwhelming trauma alone. For big material, this is stabilisation only — get a clinician.
