The Hook-Up

To quickly steady and center the body in moments of anxiety, dizziness, faintness, or overwhelm by pressing two points — the navel and the ‘third eye’ — and pulling up while breathing deeply.

Beginner ~15-30 sec (longer if desired) Eden Energy Medicine (Meridian-Based Energy Work)
Hook-Up in 4 lines: Middle finger of one hand into the navel; middle finger of the other between the eyebrows. Press both in and gently pull up. Hold 15-30 sec, breathing slowly in through the nose and out through the mouth. Release when you sigh, yawn, or feel settled.

The Hook-Up is Donna Eden’s go-to emergency centering move in her Eden Energy Medicine system: a single, gentle two-point hold she reaches for when someone (or she herself) feels anxious, dizzy, faint, scattered, or overwhelmed.

You place one middle finger in your navel and the other on your “third eye” (between the eyebrows), press in, pull both up, and breathe. Eden teaches it as the quickest way to “hook up” the two central energy channels of the body and restore a sense of being collected and present — often signaled, she says, by a spontaneous sigh or yawn.

Eden’s instructions (from Energy Medicine and her teaching):

  1. Place the first finger in the navel. Put the middle finger of one hand into your belly button and press in gently.
  2. Place the second finger on the third eye. Put the middle finger of the other hand between your eyebrows, just above the bridge of the nose, and press in gently.
  3. Press and pull up. With both fingers pressing into the skin, pull each one gently upward (toward the top of the head) and hold the tension.
  4. Hold and breathe. Maintain the hold for about 15-30 seconds — longer if you like — breathing deeply in through the nose and out through the mouth. 5. Wait for the sign. Eden says a deep sigh, yawn, or relaxation breath typically arises, which she takes as the signal that the energies have “hooked up.” Release when you feel settled. Eden frames the move as bridging the central meridian (energy up the front of the body) and the governing meridian (energy up the spine), connecting front-to-back and head-to-torso so you feel pulled together rather than fragmented. (Sourcing note: the two-point location, the press-and-pull-up action, the breathing, and the “sigh/yawn” cue are Eden’s documented instructions, faithfully paraphrased.)

Donna Eden (b. 1943) developed her system after recovering from serious illness; the Hook-Up appears in her foundational book Energy Medicine (with David Feinstein, PhD; Tarcher/Putnam, 1998, rev.

2008). → (Eden, Donna). The central and governing vessels are concepts from Traditional Chinese Medicine / acupuncture (the Ren and Du channels), which Eden adapts. The “navel + brow hold” form resembles applied-kinesiology and Touch for Health balancing moves and the held-point methods of Energy Psychology.

Touch for Health / applied kinesiology — holding pairs of points to “balance” energy; same family of self-touch holds.

  • TAT (Tapas Acupressure Technique) — holding head/face points while breathing to calm; structurally similar.
  • Self-soothing / grounding (somatic therapy) — hand-on-body holds plus slow breath to down-regulate arousal in panic or dissociation.
  • Mudra-and-breath holds (yoga) — a fixed gesture sustained with deep breathing to settle the mind.

Holding the breath / shallow breathing. The deep, slow breathing does most of the real work — don’t skip it.

  • Pressing too hard. It’s a gentle press-and-lift, not a deep dig; the brow especially is tender.
  • Rushing the release. Stay until the sigh/yawn or a clear softening; 5 seconds is rarely enough.
  • Using it instead of care. It is a calming tool, not a treatment — see safety.
