Matrix Reimprinting

To revisit a distressing memory as an inner scene, tap (EFT) on the ‘ECHO’ — the younger frozen self held in that memory — to release its distress, then co-create and ‘reimprint’ a new, resourced version of the scene so the old picture loses its emotional charge.

Intermediate 30–60 min Energy Psychology
Matrix Reimprinting in 7 lines: (1) Pick a specific distressing memory.

(2) Step in; find your frozen younger self (the ECHO).

(3) Tap on the ECHO while tapping on yourself to calm it.

(4) Ask what happened / what they believed and needed.

(5) “How would you like this to change?” — bring in what was missing, with consent.

(6) Reimprint the new resourced picture into body and heart.

(7) Re-check the old memory. It’s exposure + imagery rescripting; the “energy field” part is unproven.

Matrix Reimprinting is a technique that grafts a memory-rescripting process onto EFT tapping. In ordinary EFT you tap on acupressure points while tuning into present distress. Dawson’s twist: you go into the memory itself, find the younger version of you frozen in that traumatic moment — he calls this the ECHO (Energetic Consciousness Hologram) — tap to calm that self, talk with them to learn what the moment meant, and then help them rewrite the scene into something safe and resourced.

Finally you “reimprint“ the new picture into mind and body. The claim is that by changing the held picture rather than just damping today’s symptom, the old memory stops driving present-day reactions.

  1. Find the memory. Identify a specific distressing memory connected to the present issue (a phobia, belief, pattern, or symptom).
  2. Meet the ECHO. Imagine stepping into the scene as your present self and find your younger self (the ECHO) frozen there. You can pause the “movie” at any point and approach them. Crucially, you treat the ECHO as a separate self to help, not as you re-living it head-on (this builds a protective distance vs. straight re-experiencing).
  3. Tap on the ECHO (while tapping on yourself). Using the EFT point sequence, imagine tapping on the younger self while physically tapping on your own points, to take the emotional intensity out of their experience.
  4. Dialogue. Talk with the ECHO: ask what happened, what they believed, what they needed and didn’t get. This surfaces the meaning/decision frozen in the memory.
  5. Change the picture. Once the ECHO is calmer, ask: “How would you like this to be different?” Bring in whatever they needed — a protector, the truth they didn’t have, a different ending — and let the scene transform with their consent.
  6. Reimprint. Take the new, resourced picture and deliberately install it: run it through the body, breathe it into the heart, and (in Dawson’s framing) “send it out into the Matrix” so the new image replaces the old as the reference.
  7. Test. Return to the original memory; check whether the charge has dropped and whether the present-day issue feels different. (Faithful summary of the published protocol; “ECHO,” “Matrix,” and “reimprint” are Dawson’s terms. Not a reproduction of the copyrighted manual.)

Karl Dawson, an EFT Master, developed Matrix Reimprinting around 2006 and set it out in Matrix Reimprinting Using EFT (with Sasha Allenby, 2010).

It descends directly from Gary Craig’s EFT and is a sibling of, not identical to, other EFT spin-offs in this library such as FasterEFT / Eutaptics and Thought Field Therapy.

What makes it distinct is the explicit imagery-rescripting move — entering and rewriting the memory-picture — which independently exists as an evidence-based clinical technique (imagery rescripting for trauma, nightmares, and intrusive imagery).

Doing it solo on severe trauma. The distancing helps, but major trauma still needs a trained practitioner; self-administering can flood or re-traumatise.

  • Forcing a “happy ending.” The new picture must come from what the ECHO genuinely needed, with consent — not a pasted-on positive that the person doesn’t believe.
  • Skipping the dialogue. The belief/meaning is the lever; jumping straight to a new picture without learning what was frozen there weakens the result.
  • Crediting the field. If the charge drops, that’s rescripting + exposure, not energy sent to a Matrix.
  • No grounding/closure. End resourced and present; don’t leave a memory half-opened.
