Collier's Perfect-Image Health Treatment
Night and morning, deny the reality of the ailment and affirm the ‘perfect image’ of the body (or a single organ) that ‘Universal Mind’ holds — refusing the fear-picture and holding the well-image so the subconscious rebuilds along it.
Night and morning, on one organ at a time: state that the body and the disease have no power of their own and that Mind knows only a “perfect image” of you; then drop the sickness-picture and hold the well-image with calm conviction. Use only as a fear-reducing adjunct — never instead of medical care.
What it is
This is Collier’s specific mental treatment for the body, from the health chapter of The Secret of the Ages. The method renders his general principle into a fixed, repeated routine: night and morning, on one organ or condition at a time, you deny that the body or the disease has any power of its own, and affirm the “perfect image” that “Universal Mind” / “Divine Mind” holds of you — then refuse the fear-picture and dwell only on the well-image, “so that no belief of sickness reaches your subconscious mind.” Collier’s rationale is the New Thought “model” idea: “Before anything can be made, there must be a model for it in mind… The only idea of you that Universal Mind knows is a perfect model.” > This entry is documented for faithful completeness.
Its strong claims (disease as “illusion,” body rebuilt by holding an image) are not medically reliable. It is included with the safety frame foregrounded.
The Method
- Deny the ailment’s power; affirm Mind as sole cause. “My body has no intelligence. Neither has any germ of disease. Therefore neither my body nor the disease can tell me I am sick. Mind is the only cause… The only image of my body that Mind knows is a perfect, vigorous, healthy image. And that is the only image I am going to build on.”
- Then drop the disease-picture entirely. “Then forget the image of disease… Keep in your mind’s eye the image of perfect health, of vigorous, boundless vitality.”
- Repeat a fixed formula night and morning, one organ at a time. Collier gives a worked example for the stomach: “Every morning when you awake, and every night just before you drop off to sleep say to yourself — ‘My stomach has neither intelligence nor feeling. It functions only as mind directs it… the only image that Mind knows of stomach is Its perfect image…’” Then: “Concentrate on the one organ at a time, and repeat this formula to yourself night and morning. Say it, feel it, BELIEVE it.”
- Optionally direct attention/relaxation to the part. He cites relaxing “in every nerve and muscle” and “consciously sending thought” to the affected area; “Put your hand upon the part affected. Try to visualize that organ as it should be. See it functioning perfectly.”
- Hold the verse as the engine. “Whatsoever things ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye RECEIVE them, and ye SHALL HAVE them.” (Sourcing note: quoted formulas are verbatim from the health chapter of The Secret of the Ages.)
Source & Lineage
Robert Collier, The Secret of the Ages (1926), health chapter. The “deny the ailment, affirm the perfect Divine image” structure is classic New Thought / Christian Science-adjacent mental healing (Quimby, Eddy, Cady, Fillmore), which Collier popularised in plain prosperity-era language. Compare.
Common refinements
Taking “disease is an illusion” literally. The dangerous error. Symptoms are real signals; act on them.
- Treating many things at once. Collier says “one organ at a time.”
- Affirming without calm. “Say it, feel it, BELIEVE it” — agitation undercuts it; the value is largely in the relaxation/lowered fear.
- Using it to avoid the doctor. The single most important refinement: this runs alongside care, never instead of it.
