The Practices

Breath & Energy  ·  “Breath Is the Bridge”

Testicle / Ovarian Breathing

To gather sexual energy (Ching/Jing Chi) at the genitals and draw it upward via gentle pelvic-floor contraction, breath, and attention along the spine to the head and into the Microcosmic Orbit — conserving and ‘transforming’ sexual energy rather than discharging it.

(Foundations first: Inner Smile + Microcosmic Orbit.) Sit relaxed, tongue to palate, breathe into the belly. Warmly gather energy at the testicles / ovaries — cool and contained, not aroused to climax. Gently contract the perineum and draw the energy down to the perineum, then up the sacrum and spine to the head with a soft pumping action. Circulate it down the front and store at the navel via the Orbit. Light contractions, never forced; keep it out of the head.

Testicle Breathing (men) and Ovarian Breathing (women) are the entry practices of Mantak Chia’s “Healing Love” curriculum. Without genital stimulation, you gather sexual energy at the genitals and draw it upward — using gentle pelvic-floor and perineum contractions, slow breath, and attention — from the testicles/ovaries to the perineum, up the sacrum and spine to the head, then circulate it down the front and store it at the navel via the Microcosmic Orbit.

The Daoist aim is to conserve and “transform” sexual essence (Ching/Jing Chi) into refined energy rather than lose it through ejaculation/menstrual depletion. Read honestly: this combines pelvic-floor contraction (Kegel-type), slow breathing, and focused arousal-regulating attention within an energy-alchemy frame.

Faithful paraphrase of Chia’s Taoist Secrets of Love and Healing Love Through the Tao. Prerequisite: Chia teaches these only after the Inner Smile and an established Microcosmic Orbit.

  1. Sit relaxed (or lie down), tongue to the palate, spine soft and upright, breathing slowly into the belly. Warm and relax the body first (Inner Smile).
  2. Gather at the genitals. Bring gentle, warm attention to the testicles (men) or ovaries (women — the point about a hand-span below the navel, midway in from the hips). Breathe softly “into” the area until you feel warmth, tingling, or fullness. (Men may use light scrotal/testicle “breathing” — a subtle drawing sensation; women circle attention in the ovarian palace.)
  3. Cool, contained energy — not arousal discharge. This is non-ejaculatory and not about climax; keep arousal gentle and the attention cool and collected.
  4. Draw down to the perineum. On a slow exhale (or inhale, per the staged instructions), gently contract the perineum (the Hui Yin) and draw the warm energy from the genitals down to the perineum.
  5. Pump up the sacrum and spine. With light contractions of the perineum/anus and a small tilt of the sacrum, draw the energy up to the sacrum, then up the spine to the head — the same Governor-channel route as the Microcosmic Orbit. Chia describes a soft pumping/“sipping” action coordinated with breath, never a forceful push.
  6. Circulate and store. Bring the energy over the crown to the mid-brow, down the front midline (Conception channel) through the tongue/palate link, and store it at the navel — completing the Orbit so energy is grounded, not stuck in the head or genitals.
  7. Finish at the navel. Spiral and rest the gathered energy at the navel centre. (Sourcing note: the testicle/ovarian gathering, the non-stimulation/non-ejaculatory emphasis, the perineum contraction, sacral tilt, spinal draw, and the requirement to circulate into and store via the Microcosmic Orbit are Chia’s documented instructions; descriptions are faithful paraphrase. Related Healing Love practices Chia teaches alongside these — Scrotal Compression, the Power Lock / Big Draw, the Orgasmic Upward Draw — are distinct techniques and are only named here for context.)

Mantak Chia (b. 1944), founder of the Healing Tao / Universal Healing Tao, presented these practices to Western readers in Taoist Secrets of Love: Cultivating Male Sexual Energy (Aurora Press, 1984) and Healing Love Through the Tao: Cultivating Female Sexual Energy (1986; rev.

Destiny Books, 2005). They draw on classical Daoist sexual alchemy / “bedchamber arts” and neidan essence-refinement (jing → chi → shen), and they presuppose the Microcosmic Orbit as the channel into which the energy is fed. → suggested node.

Microcosmic Orbit (same system) — the circulation channel these practices feed into; required foundation.

  • Classical Daoist sexual alchemy / bedchamber arts — the historical parent: conserving and refining sexual essence.
  • Tantric sexual / kundalini practices (yoga) — raising sexual/spinal energy toward the crown; related aims and comparable arousal-regulation risks.
  • Pelvic-floor (Kegel) training — the secular, evidence-based core of the contraction component (pelvic-floor strength, ejaculatory/continence control).
  • Inner-fire / embryonic breathing — gathering and circulating internal heat/energy.

Skipping the prerequisites. Chia is explicit: build the Inner Smile and Microcosmic Orbit first, or drawn-up energy has nowhere safe to go.

  • Forcing the draw / clenching hard. Strong, gripping contractions create pelvic tension and over-heating. The contractions are light; the action is a soft “sip,” not a squeeze.
  • Confusing it with arousal/climax practice. It is cool and non-ejaculatory; pushing toward orgasm defeats the purpose and raises overheating risk.
  • Leaving energy in the head or genitals. Always circulate down and store at the navel — the same head-heat caution as the Orbit.
  • Practising agitated or distracted. Relax and warm the body first; this is a calm gathering, not a workout.
