The Microcosmic Orbit

To establish an unbroken loop of relaxed attention (and, in Daoist framing, chi) flowing up the back channel and down the front, joined by the tongue at the palate — calming the body, integrating front and back, and ‘opening the orbit’ as the base for further Healing Tao practice.

Intermediate 15–30 min Daoist (Neidan / Healing Tao)
Sit relaxed, tongue to the palate, and breathe slowly into the navel until it feels warm. Sink the attention to the perineum, then draw it up the spine — sacrum, back, base of skull, crown — to the mid-brow. Let it flow down the front midline — throat, heart, navel — completing the loop. Circulate smoothly with the breath, never forcing. Always finish by gathering the energy at the navel. A flow, not a push; keep it out of the head.

The Microcosmic Orbit (Chinese Xiao Zhou Tian, “Small Heavenly Cycle”) is the central circulation practice of Mantak Chia’s Healing Tao. You rest relaxed attention at the navel, let it sink and gather, then guide it down to the perineum, up the spine (the Governor / Du channel, felt as warm/yang), over the crown to the mid-brow, and down the front midline (the Conception / Ren channel, felt as cool/yin) back to the navel — a continuous loop.

The tongue touches the upper palate to “join” the two channels into one circuit. In Daoist framing this circulates chi; read honestly, it is a structured practice of slow breathing plus sustained, moving interoceptive attention along the body’s midline.

As Chia teaches it (faithful paraphrase of Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao and the Universal Healing Tao curriculum):

  1. Prepare and relax. Sit on the edge of a chair, feet flat, spine upright but soft, hands resting. Smile inwardly (Chia normally precedes the Orbit with the Inner Smile), breathe slowly into the belly, and let tension drain.
  2. Touch the tongue to the palate. Rest the tongue tip on the roof of the mouth, just behind the front teeth. Chia calls the tongue “the switch” that connects the front (Conception) and back (Governor) channels so the current can flow in a complete circle.
  3. Gather at the navel. Bring attention to a point slightly below and behind the navel (the lower dan tien). Breathe there until you feel warmth, fullness, or a gentle pulsing — “collecting” energy before moving it.
  4. Descend the front to the perineum. Let the warm attention sink from the navel down through the lower abdomen to the perineum (the Hui Yin, between the genitals and anus).
  5. Rise up the Governor channel (back). Draw the attention from the perineum to the sacrum/tailbone, up the spine, to the back of the neck/base of the skull (Jade Pillow), to the crown, and forward to the mid-eyebrow point (third eye). Chia teaches pausing briefly at these “stations” until each feels open and the attention passes smoothly.
  6. Descend the Conception channel (front). From the mid-brow, let the attention flow down through the tongue/palate connection, down the throat, chest (heart centre), solar plexus, and back to the navel, completing one orbit.
  7. Circulate several times. Continue looping smoothly with the breath, attention moving as a single connected current, not jumping in pieces.
  8. Always finish at the navel — collect and store. Spiral the gathered feeling into the navel centre and rest there. Chia is emphatic: you must end by storing energy at the navel, never leave it concentrated in the head. (Sourcing note: the tongue-to-palate “switch,” the Governor-up / Conception-down direction, the perineum→sacrum→spine→crown→mid-brow→navel route, and the collect-at-the-navel finish are Chia’s documented instructions; descriptions are faithful paraphrase, not quotation.)

Mantak Chia (b. 1944), founder of the Healing Tao / Universal Healing Tao, introduced the Microcosmic Orbit to a mass Western audience in Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao: The Taoist Secret of Circulating Internal Power (Aurora Press, 1983).

The practice itself is far older: it is the core of Daoist neidan (internal alchemy) “small circulation,” with classical roots associated with figures such as Zhang Sanfeng. → see the classical treatment at.

In Chia’s system the Orbit is the gateway practice that follows the Inner Smile and underlies the Six Healing Sounds, Iron Shirt, and Healing Love practices. → suggested node.

Classical Daoist neidan (“small circulation”) — the same Governor-up / Conception-down loop, framed as refining jing → chi → shen.

  • Kundalini / spinal energy raising (yoga) — energy moving up the spine to the crown; structurally related, with stronger arousal and risk.
  • Embryonic / inner-fire breathing — Daoist and tantric cousins that gather and circulate inner heat.
  • Middle Pillar / Circulation of the Body of Light (Western esoteric) — guided circulation of “light”/energy through body centres.
  • Body-scan / interoceptive meditation — the secular skeleton: moving attention systematically through the body.

Leaving energy in the head. The single most-warned-against error. Chia insists you always circulate down the front and store at the navel — concentrating attention/sensation at the crown or third eye is what practitioners link to headaches, insomnia, and agitation.

  • Forcing or “pushing” the current. Strain creates tension and over-heating. The attention should glide; let the breath carry it.
  • Forgetting the tongue. Without the tongue at the palate the circuit is “broken”; keep it lightly placed throughout.
  • Going too fast / too long, too soon. Building the Orbit is gradual. Over-doing intensive sessions is associated with the energy-disturbance reports under Safety.
  • Skipping the Inner Smile / relaxation first. Entering tense undermines the whole practice; soften first.
