The Permission Slip
Consciously use any chosen tool, ritual, or object as a self-given ‘permission slip’ that lets you access a capacity already within you — while recognizing the change comes from you, not the object.
Permission slip: Name the state you want to access. Pick any tool that means something to you. Consciously assign it: “I use this to give myself permission to be [the state].” Use it, let the state rise through you — and keep remembering the power is yours, the object only a key. Over time, need the key less; you are the ultimate permission slip.
What it is
A reframe Bashar offers for every tool, ritual, technique, and object people use to change their state — crystals, tarot, mantras, ceremonies, lucky objects, even medicines. His claim is that none of these contains the power; they are “permission slips” you hand yourself, symbolic keys that let you give yourself permission to access a state or ability you already carry.
The crystal does not heal you; your belief that it can gives you permission to activate your own capacity. The practical payoff is twofold: you can deliberately use a permission slip when it helps you shift state, and you can eventually recognize that you were always the source — so you depend on the prop less, not more. Bashar’s endpoint: “you are the ultimate permission slip.”
The Method
Faithfully described from the Bashar material (short quotes only):
- Pick the ability or state you want to access — calm, confidence, focus, a sense of healing, creative flow. Define it as something you want to be, now.
- Choose any tool that already carries meaning for you — an object, a ritual, a phrase, a piece of music, a stone. It does not matter which; what matters is that you grant it significance.
- Consciously assign it the permission. Decide, explicitly: “I’m using this to give myself permission to access [the state].” Bashar’s point is that the act of granting permission is the operative move — “when you give any tool a permission slip, its power and effectiveness” rise.
- Use the tool and let the state come up through you. Hold the object, do the ritual, say the phrase — and allow the shift, understanding the energy is generated by you, the tool serving only as a bridge.
- Remember where the power lives. Keep the recognition that the change is in you, not the object. The mature use is to need the slip less over time, until you can grant yourself the state directly — “you are the ultimate permission slip.” (Sourcing note: paraphrase plus short attributed phrases from the publicly published material; not a reproduction of any recording.)
Source & Lineage
Darryl Anka (b. 1951) has channelled “Bashar” since 1983. The “permission slip” idea recurs across the transmissions as Bashar’s general account of why any spiritual or self-help tool works — a deflationary, locus-of-power explanation that places agency in the user rather than the device.
It echoes New Thought’s insistence that the cause is mental, and folk-magical “charging” practices in which an object’s power is understood to come from the operator’s intent.
The Traditions' versions
The move — let a chosen object or ritual unlock a capacity that was yours all along — appears wherever a tradition is honest that the prop is a focusing device: - Charging a talisman (Western magic) — an object made potent by the operator’s deliberately invested intent, not by itself.
- The invisible talisman (W. Clement Stone / PMA) — a self-given symbolic cue that triggers a desired mental attitude on demand.
- The placebo response (clinical research) — the demonstrable, named scientific cousin: expectation and ritual context produce real physiological and psychological effects with an inert object.
- Anchoring (NLP) — pairing a deliberate cue (touch, word) with a state so the cue later re-evokes it.
Common refinements
Believing the object holds the power. That is the exact error the framing is meant to dissolve. The slip authorizes; you generate.
- Trading one dependence for another. A permission slip you can’t function without has become a crutch; the aim is to need it less over time.
- Choosing a tool you don’t actually believe in. The effect runs on your assigned meaning; a slip you find hollow grants nothing.
- Using it to bypass real help. A permission slip for “healing” is a state-shift aid, not treatment for a medical condition.
