Barker's Five-Step Spiritual Mind Treatment
Move from wanting a condition to mentally accepting it as already so, by speaking a structured five-step treatment (Recognition, Unification, Realization/Declaration, Thanksgiving, Release) framed as a definite decision the deeper mind must carry out.
Barker’s five-step treatment: Recognise the one creative Mind. Unify — I am one with it. Declare the specific good as already true, present tense, decided (not requested). Give thanks as though it is done. Release it completely — speak the word once with conviction and stop re-treating. Then act on what the decision implies.
What it is
This is Raymond Charles Barker’s handling of the classic Science of Mind treatment — the structured affirmative prayer he inherited from Ernest Holmes — but stamped with his own emphasis on decision and acceptance.
For Barker, treatment is not pleading or wishing; it is the mind deciding a thing is so and declaring it, then letting the deeper mind execute. He runs the standard five movements — Recognition, Unification, Realization (the declaration), Thanksgiving, Release — but his accent falls on the third and fifth steps: the definite declaration (you are not asking, you are accepting) and the clean release (having decided, you stop re-treating, exactly as a decided person stops re-deciding).
It is the affirmative-prayer counterpart to his Power of Decision work: the same conviction that a clear, single, accepted statement carries more force than repeated anxious effort.
The Method
Faithfully described from Barker’s teaching of the five steps (attributed paraphrase, short quotation only):
- Recognition. Begin by recognising the nature of what Barker, with Holmes, called the one creative Mind / God / Infinite — present, intelligent, available. You are not creating power; you are recognising it.
- Unification. Identify yourself with that Mind: it is not distant; “I am one with it,” it works in and through you. The gap between you and the good you want is mental, not real.
- Realization / Declaration. State the specific good as already true — present tense, definite, decided. Not “I hope to be well / prosperous,” but a clear declaration that the condition is so now. This is Barker’s pivot: treatment is a decision spoken, not a request submitted. → operationalizes The Inner Creates the Outer (belief shapes outcome) and Only Love Is Real (the meaning you assign — “this is so” — is yours to set).
- Thanksgiving. Give thanks as though it is done — gratitude is acceptance made audible, the felt sign that you have stopped doubting.
- Release. Let it go entirely. Having decided and declared, you do not re-treat anxiously. As Barker would have it, you “speak the word” once with conviction and then turn it loose to the Law to carry out. Re-treating from worry is, in his frame, undoing the decision. → operationalizes The Inner Creates the Outer (a single clear impression handed to the deeper mind). (Sourcing note: the five-step structure is the standard Religious Science treatment Barker taught; the above is attributed description and short quotation, not reproduction of his text.)
Source & Lineage
Barker (1911-1988) learned the treatment form directly within Ernest Holmes’s Religious Science and made it the working tool of his New York ministry. His books Treat Yourself to Life (1954) and The Science of Successful Living (1957) present treatment for everyday conditions — health, work, relationships — in his characteristically decisive, success-oriented register.
The five-step structure descends from Holmes’s Science of Mind (1926/1938).
The Traditions' versions
The five-step treatment is a shared New Thought form; what differs is the accent: - Holmes — Spiritual Mind Treatment (the source form) — the canonical five steps; Barker’s version is the same skeleton with his decision/acceptance emphasis layered on the Declaration and Release.
- Bailes’ Seven-Step Mental Treatment — a longer, picture-building variant aimed at healing.
- Holmes — definite treatment for a goal — treatment applied to a concrete objective.
- Murphy — scientific prayer — the subconscious-impression version of affirmative prayer.
- Affirmative prayer / treatment generally (Colemon, Fox) — the wider family Barker drew from.
Common refinements
Asking instead of accepting. “Please let me be well” is petition, not treatment. Barker’s step 3 is a declaration of present fact. If it feels false, work first on a statement you can actually accept.
- Never releasing. Re-treating the same condition out of anxiety signals you have not accepted it; it undoes the decision. Speak it with conviction, then release.
- Declaring what you cannot believe at all. A treatment far beyond your present conviction breeds inner argument. Pitch the declaration at the edge of believability, then move it up.
- Using treatment to avoid action. Treatment is meant to align mind and then act, not to sit and wait. Do the practical steps the situation requires.
- Mechanical recitation. The steps without felt acceptance are empty words. The Thanksgiving step exists precisely to check: do I actually accept this as so?
