What it was
The New Church was organised in London in 1787 by readers of Emanuel Swedenborg, the Swedish scientist-seer whose visions described a spiritual world standing behind the natural one through a law of “correspondences.” Though Swedenborg founded no church himself, his writings shaped a lasting denomination and influenced figures from Blake to the New Thought movement.
Its place in the lineage
The institutional carrier of Swedenborg’s correspondence-cosmology — an important tributary into Spiritualism and New Thought.
