What it was
Founded in London in 1882 by Cambridge scholars including Henry Sidgwick and F.W.H. Myers, the Society for Psychical Research set out to examine telepathy, mediumship, apparitions and the question of survival after death without prejudice.
Its presidents included William James, Sir Oliver Lodge and Henri Bergson, lending real intellectual weight to the study of mind beyond the body.
Its place in the lineage
The first serious institution to put the mystics’ claims about mind to empirical test — the ancestor of modern parapsychology and consciousness research.
