What it was
Paramahansa Yogananda founded Self-Realization Fellowship in 1920 to disseminate Kriya Yoga — a meditation technique in the lineage of Lahiri Mahasaya and Sri Yukteswar — and the underlying unity of Eastern and Western spirituality.
His Autobiography of a Yogi (1946) became one of the most influential spiritual books of the century.
Its place in the lineage
The channel through which yogic meditation entered Western popular spirituality at scale, downstream of the same impulse as the Vedanta Society.
