Esoteric current · Founded 1,614 · Europe; AMORC headquartered in San Jose, California · Active today
Founded by (Manifestos, anonymous), H. Spencer Lewis (AMORC) — Manifestos 1614–1617; AMORC revived the order in 1915.
What it was
Rosicrucianism began with three anonymous manifestos published in Germany between 1614 and 1617, announcing a secret brotherhood of sages devoted to esoteric healing and the reform of humanity. Whether the original order ever existed is unresolved, but the symbol of the rose and cross inspired waves of real organisations — the SRIA, the Rosicrucian Fellowship, and Harvey Spencer Lewis’s AMORC (1915), today the largest. This is an umbrella current rather than one chartered body.
Its place in the lineage
The Rosicrucian stream feeds directly into Freemasonry, the Golden Dawn and Anthroposophy; many figures here belonged to a specific Rosicrucian order while drawing on the wider mythos.
