Plato founded the Academy in a grove outside Athens around 387 BCE, where philosophy, mathematics and dialectic were pursued for nearly a millennium. Its conviction that the visible world is a shadow of eternal Forms, grasped by the trained mind, set the deepest pattern of Western idealism until Justinian closed it in 529 CE.

The institutional root of the idea that reality is ultimately mental — the seed of every later ‘consciousness is fundamental’ claim in the Atlas.
