What it was
The Monroe Institute grew from Robert Monroe’s investigations into out-of-body experience, formalised in Virginia in the 1970s. It is built around Hemi-Sync, an audio technique using binaural beats to guide listeners into specific states of consciousness, taught through residential “Gateway” programs. It continues to run as a consciousness-research and education centre.
Its place in the lineage
The Institute represents the empirical, technology-assisted wing of the consciousness lineage — exploring the same inner states the mystics describe, through measured sound.
