What it was
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was founded in London in 1888 by William Wynn Westcott, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and William Robert Woodman, three Freemasons and Rosicrucians.
Its graded curriculum wove together the Kabbalah, tarot, astrology, geomancy, alchemy and Enochian magic into a single initiatory system. Though the original order fractured by 1903, its rituals and correspondences remain the template for nearly all modern Western magic.
Its place in the lineage
The Golden Dawn is the hinge of the Western esoteric tradition: it drew its founders from Freemasonry and the Rosicrucians, recruited heavily from the Theosophical Society, and sent its heirs into the O.T.O., the Society of the Inner Light, and twentieth-century witchcraft.
