What it was
Teresa of Ávila launched the Discalced (“barefoot”) Carmelite reform in 1562, joined by John of the Cross, returning the order to austere, contemplative prayer.
Their writings — Teresa’s Interior Castle and John’s Dark Night of the Soul — are among the most precise maps of mystical experience ever written.
Its place in the lineage
The Christian tradition’s great laboratory of contemplative interior method — the disciplined inner ascent in a devotional key.
