What it was
Mary Baker Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston in 1879, codifying her teaching in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1875).
Christian Science holds that reality is wholly spiritual and that disease is healed through prayer that corrects mistaken material belief. It built a worldwide network of churches, reading rooms and The Christian Science Monitor.
Its place in the lineage
The most rigorously institutionalised of the mind-healing churches — an organised cousin of New Thought, sharing the Quimby healing root before diverging from it.
