How To

How To

sleep deeply and peacefully

When sleep won’t come, the harder you chase it the further it retreats, as a busy mind keeps the body on alert. Rest cannot be forced, but it can be invited by calming the system and giving the mind a gentler place to settle, which is where every path below works.

The Breath Path — slow the body toward rest
Resonance breathing lineage

Sleep follows a calm nervous system. Slowing the breath, especially the exhale, lowers the body’s arousal and signals that it is safe to let go.

The exercise
  1. Lie down comfortably and let the body sink into the bed.
  2. Breathe gently in through the nose for a count of about
  3. Breathe out slowly for a count of about 5 or
  4. Keep the rhythm easy and unforced for several minutes.
  5. Let the counting fade as drowsiness takes over.

The Handover Path — give the day to the subconscious
Joseph Murphy

The drowsy state just before sleep is when the subconscious is most receptive. Falling asleep in a calm, positive feeling sets the tone for both your rest and your tomorrow.

The exercise
  1. As you grow drowsy, let the day’s worries go, telling yourself they can wait until morning.
  2. Bring to mind one calm, pleasant scene or a simple word like ‘peace.’
  3. Repeat it softly and feel its quiet.
  4. Let any tension drain from the body as you do.
  5. Drift off held in that peaceful feeling.
→ Practice: Drowsy-State Subconscious Impregnation
The Awareness Path — relax into falling asleep
Charlie Morley

Resisting wakefulness keeps you awake. Gently observing the body and mind as they unwind, without trying to force sleep, lets the natural process complete itself.

The exercise
  1. Lie still and bring soft attention to the body, part by part, releasing each.
  2. Notice sensations without labeling them good or bad.
  3. Watch thoughts come and go without following them.
  4. Drop any goal of falling asleep; simply rest and observe.
  5. Allow the boundary between waking and sleep to blur on its own.
→ Practice: Mindfulness of Dream & Sleep

Sleep is not seized; it is allowed. Whether you slow the breath, hand the day to the subconscious, or simply rest in awareness, you stop fighting for rest and create the calm in which it finally comes.
