How To

How To

reverse a decision you regret

You cannot change what happened, but you keep changing it anyway, replaying the past on a loop and reliving the sting. The event is fixed; the meaning and the memory you carry are not, and that inner version is the only one that still acts on your life now.

The Neville Path — revise the scene
Neville Goddard

The past lives only as a memory in the present mind. Re-imagine the event the way you wish it had gone, and you change the version that is still shaping you.

The exercise
  1. Tonight, replay the regretted moment once, briefly.
  2. Now rewrite it: imagine it unfolding the way you wish, in vivid detail.
  3. Enter the corrected scene as if living it now, feeling the relief and dignity in it.
  4. Loop the new version several times until it feels more real than the old.
  5. Fall asleep in the revised memory.

The Byron Katie Path — question the regret
Byron Katie

Most of the suffering is not the decision but the thought ‘I should have done otherwise.’ Questioning that thought dissolves the war with reality.

The exercise
  1. Write the stressful thought: ‘I should have ___.’
  2. Ask: is it true?
  3. Ask: can I absolutely know it would have turned out better?
  4. Ask: who would I be without this thought?
  5. Turn it around (‘I should have done exactly what I did, because…’) and find three genuine reasons it could be true.

The Stoic Path — act on what remains
Marcus Aurelius / Epictetus

The past is outside your power; only the next move is yours. Regret spent on the unchangeable is energy stolen from the one thing you can still influence.

The exercise
  1. Write the decision and accept aloud: ‘This is done and cannot be undone.’
  2. List what is still in your control now.
  3. Choose the single most useful corrective action available today.
  4. Take it, however small.
  5. Each time the replay returns, redirect to: ‘What is the next right step?’
→ Practice: Deliberate Intention-Setting (The Meta-Ritual)

You don’t undo the past by force; you change the version of it you carry and the action you take next. Every path here frees you from a memory that only had power because the mind kept feeding it.
