How To

How To

heal the body with the mind

The body listens to the mind far more than we realize, and chronic stress and held emotion can keep it locked in distress. While honoring real medical care, you can use the mind to shift the inner conditions in which the body repairs itself, which is where every path below works.

The Relaxation Path — switch on repair
Herbert Benson (Mind/Body Medicine)

The body cannot heal well while the stress response is running. Eliciting deep relaxation lowers that alarm and lets the natural healing systems do their work.

The exercise
  1. Sit or lie comfortably in a quiet place.
  2. Close the eyes and let the breath slow and deepen.
  3. Silently repeat a calming word on each exhale, such as ‘peace’ or ‘one.’
  4. When the mind wanders, gently return to the word.
  5. Continue for ten to twenty minutes, then rest a moment before rising.

The Visualization Path — picture the mending
Carl and Stephanie Simonton

Vivid mental imagery of the body healing can support and encourage the body’s own restorative processes alongside proper treatment.

The exercise
  1. Relax in a comfortable position and breathe slowly.
  2. Bring to mind the area that needs healing.
  3. Picture it being soothed, repaired, and restored, in any image that feels powerful to you.
  4. Add the feeling of the body growing stronger and lighter.
  5. Close by imagining yourself well and moving freely.
→ Practice: Creative Visualization
The Somatic Path — release held tension
Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing)

The body stores stress and unfinished survival energy as tension. Gently attending to bodily sensations lets that energy discharge and the system settle.

The exercise
  1. Sit quietly and scan the body slowly from feet to head.
  2. Notice where you feel tightness, buzzing, or holding.
  3. Rest your attention gently on one such area without trying to change it.
  4. Allow any small shift, trembling, warmth, or a deeper breath, to happen on its own.
  5. Pause and notice how the area feels now.
→ Practice: Somatic Experiencing (SE)

The mind sets the weather the body lives in. Whether you relax it, picture its mending, or release what it holds, you are creating the calm in which healing becomes possible. Always work alongside, never instead of, proper medical care.
