How To

How To

change your self-image

You behave, almost automatically, in line with the picture you hold of who you are, and an outdated picture quietly limits everything. The self-image is learned, which means it can be relearned, and reshaping it is an inner act of imagination and repetition, which is where every path below works.

◆ Rooted in: The Inner Creates the Outer
The Cybernetic Path — rehearse the new self
Maxwell Maltz (Psycho-Cybernetics)

The mind cannot tell vividly imagined experience from real experience. Mentally rehearsing yourself as the person you want to be reprograms the self-image that drives your behavior.

The exercise
  1. Sit quietly for a few minutes each day.
  2. Vividly picture yourself acting as the confident, capable person you choose to be, in a specific real situation.
  3. Include the sights, sounds, and feelings as if it is happening now.
  4. Feel yourself succeeding and being that person.
  5. Repeat daily for at least twenty-one days.

The Assumption Path — wear the new identity
Neville Goddard

You become what you assume yourself to be. Persisting in the inner feeling of already being your new self, especially before sleep, hardens it into fact.

The exercise
  1. Define the ‘I am’ you want to embody in one phrase.
  2. Tonight, relax into a drowsy state and repeat that phrase inwardly with feeling.
  3. Imagine a short scene that would only be true if you already were that person.
  4. Feel it as real and natural.
  5. Fall asleep in the assumption of the new identity.
→ Practice: Living in the End
The Repetition Path — install through the day
Émile Coué (autosuggestion)

Gentle, repeated suggestion seeds the deeper mind without force. Steady positive statements gradually overwrite the old self-image.

The exercise
  1. Choose a simple, present-tense statement of your new self-image.
  2. On waking, repeat it quietly twenty times, almost like a murmur.
  3. Repeat it again just before sleep.
  4. Keep the tone easy and trusting, not strained.
  5. Continue daily and notice your behavior begin to follow.
→ Practice: Coué's Conscious Autosuggestion

You are not stuck with the picture you inherited. Whether you rehearse the new self, assume the new identity, or repeat it into your depths, you reshape the inner image, and your life rearranges to match it.
