How To
be present with your kids and family
You can be in the same room as the people you love and still be miles away, lost in your phone or your worries. Presence is a skill of attention you can deliberately strengthen, and choosing to bring your full self into this moment is an inner act, which is where every path below works.

Life only ever happens now, and so does connection. Withdrawing attention from past and future and placing it fully here is the whole of presence.
- Before you walk into the room, pause and take one conscious breath.
- Feel your feet on the floor and set down the mental to-do list for now.
- Look at the person in front of you and really see them.
- Listen to what they say without planning your reply.
- When your mind drifts, gently return to this moment and this face.
Small cues throughout the day can recall us to presence. Letting an ordinary signal become a reminder to come back to the people we are with builds the habit.
- Pick a cue that happens often at home, such as a phone notification or a doorway.
- Each time it occurs, pause and take one mindful breath.
- Smile, and silently say: ‘I am here now.’
- Bring your attention fully back to whoever is with you.
- Let the cue keep returning you, gently, all day.
We pay closer attention to what we consciously treasure. Deliberately appreciating the people in front of you naturally pulls you into presence with them.
- Look at your child or family member and silently name one thing you appreciate about them right now.
- Let yourself feel the warmth of it.
- Notice a small detail you would miss if you were distracted.
- Let that appreciation soften how you speak and listen.
- Repeat this quiet noticing throughout your time together.
The greatest gift you can give the people you love is your undivided attention. Whether you arrive in the moment, use a cue to return, or let gratitude sharpen your focus, you choose presence, and presence is where love is actually felt.
