Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma

by Peter A. Levine

Transpersonal & Somatic Psychology

Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma introduces Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing, arguing that trauma lives in the nervous system and body rather than primarily in cognitive or narrative memory. Its central claim, drawn from ethology, is that wild prey animals rarely become traumatized because they physiologically discharge survival energy, whereas humans who suppress these responses remain "stuck" in incomplete fight, flight, or freeze states.

The method is bottom-up and gradual. Levine teaches attention to the "felt sense" of bodily sensation and the careful "titration" of activation, so that frozen survival energy can be released—often through trembling and the completion of thwarted defensive movements—and the autonomic nervous system can return to regulation.

The book is a cornerstone of the somatic-transformation tradition and a direct statement of its anti-bypass logic: that healing is worked through the body and nervous system rather than achieved by thinking or positive reframing. It supplied a widely adopted vocabulary and practice for embodied trauma recovery.

In its words

Traumatic symptoms are not caused by the "triggering" event itself. They stem from the frozen residue of energy that has not been resolved and discharged; this residue remains trapped in the nervous system where it can wreak havoc on our bodies and spirits.

The ideas it carries

Practices it teaches

Somatic Experiencing (SE)

Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented approach to resolving trauma developed by Peter Levine. Its core idea: trauma is not primarily about the event but about a threat response that got 'stuck' — survival energy…

Pendulation — Oscillating Between Activation and Ease

Pendulation is Peter A. Levine's term for the rhythmic oscillation of attention — and of the nervous system itself — between activation (a place of charge, tension, distress, contraction) and an island of relative…

The Felt Sense — Tracking Raw Body Sensation (SIBAM)

Peter A. Levine, the founder of Somatic Experiencing (SE), built his entire trauma-healing method on a single primary skill: the ability to feel the felt sense — the body's raw, immediate, pre-verbal experience of…

Resourcing, Discharge & Orienting — Completing the Survival Response

This is the culminating move in Peter A. Levine's Somatic Experiencing. Its founding observation: wild animals routinely escape death yet rarely carry trauma, because they physically discharge the enormous survival…

Titration — Contacting Trauma in Small, Tolerable Doses

Titration is Peter A. Levine's principle, borrowed from chemistry, for releasing trauma gradually — a drop at a time — rather than all at once.
