Thought-Forms
Occultism & Chaos MagickThought-Forms, written by C.W. Leadbeater with Annie Besant, advances the claim that thoughts and emotions generate definite structures in subtle space, possessing characteristic shapes and colors that a trained clairvoyant can observe. Mental and emotional life is thereby treated not as private and formless but as an objective field of forms readable by disciplined perception.
Leadbeater's method is that of pseudo-empirical observation: he presents subtle phenomena as data gathered by a trained instrument, cataloguing specific colors as specific emotions and rendering the results in illustrated diagrams. Vague feeling appears as diffuse cloud, clear and focused intent as sharply defined geometric form, establishing that clarity of thought yields strength and structure in the form produced.
The book belongs to the Theosophical effort to give occultism the authority of reportable detail, and its systematization of color-coded energy fed directly into the standardized vocabulary of auras and the seven-chakra body that later visualization and energy practitioners would inherit.
In its words
We have often heard it said that thoughts are things, and there are many among us who are persuaded of the truth of this statement.
In just the same way the forceful thought will carry very much further than the weak and undecided thought; but clearness and definiteness are of even greater importance than strength.
Practices it teaches
Building a Thought-Form — deliberately constructing a clear, sustained mental image
Thought-Forms (Besant with Leadbeater, 1905) advances a striking claim: every definite thought builds a definite form.
Building a Thought-Form — constructing a clear, charged mental image of a quality or aim
Thought-Forms (1905), which Leadbeater co-authored with Annie Besant and illustrated with colour plates of "clairvoyantly observed" thought-shapes, makes a bold claim: every definite thought builds a definite form.
