The Way of the Shaman

by Michael Harner

Shamanic & Toltec

The Way of the Shaman distills Michael Harner's anthropological fieldwork into a practical manual of what he termed core shamanism. Its central claim is that beneath the diverse cosmologies of the world's shamanic cultures lies a common, teachable method for entering altered states and traveling to "non-ordinary reality" to seek guidance and healing.

The book's method is deliberate state induction. Harner strips shamanic technique of any single culture's mythology and presents the shamanic journey—steady, monotonous drumming used to induce a "shamanic state of consciousness" in which the practitioner meets helping spirits and power animals. Trance is reframed not as pathology or indigenous preserve but as a learnable skill of directed attention.

Through this distillation and the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, Harner made deliberate altered-state work a widespread practice in the modern West. The book became the foundational text of Western neo-shamanism and embedded drum-induced journeying in contemporary healing culture.

In its words

Shamanism is a great mental and emotional adventure, one in which the patient as well as the shaman-healer are involved.

The Shamanic Journey — drumming to the Lower World for a power animal

Finding and Singing Your Power Song — a personal chant to raise power

A power song is a short, simple, highly repetitive song or chant that a practitioner receives as their own and sings aloud to raise "power" — Harner's term for the focused, energised state needed for shamanic work.

Dancing Your Power Animal — embodying the ally through movement and sound

In Michael Harner's Core Shamanism, meeting a power animal on a journey is only the beginning; the animal must be kept, and Harner taught that the principal way to keep it is to dance it — to physically embody the…

The Upper World Journey — ascending to meet a spirit teacher

This is the upward counterpart to the better-known Lower World journey. Where the descent journey goes down through an opening in the earth to meet a power animal (an ally encountered as an animal), the Upper World…
