The Virtuous City (Al-Madina al-Fadila)
Islamic Neoplatonism (falsafa)The Virtuous City (Al-Madina al-Fadila) is a work of Islamic Neoplatonic philosophy that unites metaphysics, cosmology, and politics. Its central claim is that right order in the soul and right order in society alike flow from alignment with a higher Intelligence, so that the inner state and the outer community share a single principle.
The argument rests on a scheme of emanation: from the First, the one necessary principle, proceeds a graded series of ten intellects, the last of which, the active intellect, governs the sublunar world and illuminates the human mind, raising it from potential to actual knowing. The ideal community is accordingly led by a philosopher-prophet whose soul is in contact with that active intellect.
Composed by the thinker honored as the Second Teacher, the work naturalized Greek philosophy within Islamic thought and set the agenda for Avicenna and the later tradition. Its linking of cosmic unity, inner illumination, and human flourishing offers an early articulation of mind completed through contact with a higher order.
