The Vimalakirti Sutra

Anonymous (Mahayana)

Buddhism

The Vimalakirti Sutra is a beloved Mahayana scripture whose hero is not a monk but a layman, the enlightened householder Vimalakirti, who outstrips the Buddha's greatest disciples in wisdom while living fully in the world.

Feigning illness, he draws the disciples into dialogues that dismantle their attachments to purity, renunciation, and fixed doctrine, culminating in his famous "thunderous silence" on the nature of nonduality. The sutra insists that awakening is available amid ordinary life, and that the pure land is this very world seen with a purified mind.

Its layman-sage and its collapse of the divide between sacred and secular made it especially dear to Zen and to lay Buddhism across East Asia.
