The Vijnana Bhairava Tantra
Anonymous (Kashmir Shaivism)
Yoga & TantraThe Vijnana Bhairava Tantra is a revered text of Kashmir Shaivism, cast as an intimate dialogue between the divine couple in which the Goddess asks after the nature of ultimate reality and receives in reply a wealth of contemplative methods. It belongs to the non-dual tantric tradition that flowered in Kashmir in the medieval period.
Its substance is a set of some one hundred and twelve doorways into expanded consciousness, drawing on breath, sensation, perception, emotion, and the gaps between thoughts. Rather than setting the sacred apart from ordinary life, it treats every common experience as a usable threshold, a place where attention turned inward may open onto the divine ground underlying all appearance.
For a study of mind, the text is notable for its breadth and inclusiveness, locating access to the absolute not in a single rarefied technique but in the whole field of lived experience. By presenting awareness itself as the medium in which the divine is recognised, it frames consciousness as continuous with its source and makes the careful direction of attention the means by which that continuity is realised.
