The Tree of Life

by Israel Regardie

Occult/Hermetic (Golden Dawn)

The Tree of Life is Israel Regardie's first major disclosure of the magical system he had learned through formal initiatory grade work, and its central argument is that ceremonial magic constitutes a coherent psycho-spiritual technology aimed at integrating the personality rather than a tissue of superstition.

Regardie writes as both initiate and would-be reformer, presenting the structure of Western magical training while reframing its purpose in modern terms. Convinced that the order's knowledge stood in danger of being lost, he moved to document it; later he would relate the work explicitly to Jungian individuation and Freudian analysis and even urge that aspirants undergo psychotherapy before advanced practice.

The book opened the path that culminated in his fuller publication of the Golden Dawn corpus, transforming a closed initiatory secret into a usable curriculum. It established Regardie as the principal bridge between the Western magical tradition and modern depth psychology.

In its words

For Magic, let me insist, is lucid. It is definite and precise. There are no vague formulae or dubieties comprehended within the sphere of its exactitude; all is clear-cut and devised for practical experiment.

Magic is not that popularly conceived practice which is the child of hallucination begotten by savage ignorance, and which panders to the lusts of a depraved mankind.
